Olympics are you excited

These big sporting events are my favourtie thing in the world I love that they go on for days and go through a real withdrawal when they end. I watch as much as possible it doesn't matter what it is. I just marvel at the level these people have achieved in their beloved field. The time work and sacrfice made by them and their families to reach this level is unbelieveable and I for one really praise them for it. I truly hope each one achieves what they have set out for and come back a bigger and better person for it. Don't forget to wear the Maple Leaf proud during this time.

Ok that is such a cute story... At one point we owned 3 or 4 horses, and I dont think my mom even relized until she got the barn bill. I guess she lost count.

:D :D :D my mom would always keep a shopping list on the fridge so she could write down stuff as we ran out .. when I was 7 or so I started adding horse to her weekly list :D :D she still laughs about that today

i know riding kept me out of trouble, I had to be up at 4 am on most summer weekends to go to the barn and get ready to go to the shows. It gave me foucs and kept me very active.

I know my duaghter will love taking in leasons she has bene asking for her own pony since she could talk!!! LOL

When it has to do with sports I am all over it and I couldn't agree more Sports of any sorts keeps the kids focused and busy horses, skiing, hockey, music whatever it is keep them busy in something they love and it helps keep them out of the malls and just hanging around.

too funny condogirl!!lol!! I have an image of a thelwell pony running through my mind....it's too bad about your knees, takes the enjoyment out of doing things if it results in joint pain for days afterwards. :(

I'm sure your daughter will love the lessons....little girls just seem to gravitate towards horses....I remember reading an article about this years ago.

Also, when they get into their teen years, riding (I would guess it's the same with other sports too) keeps them focused and busy and less likely to get into trouble. I know alot of my school friends were spending their summers and weekends hanging out at the mall and I'd be up at the barn riding and working around the stables.

sorry for completely hijacking your thread jeep :o

caledon equestrian centre in palgrave - the best part is they have this great caterer that comes in and they make the best food!!! OH ya and there is a bar, LOL, it really makes a for a nice way to spend a summer day. Pony Club Days were fun, we even did the prince philip games, they were always a blast! I was 5 10 when I stoped doing them and I was ridding a 13.2 hand pony name snuffy LMAO. Its funny I still miss riding every day of my life, if I see a horse on TV I have to stop and watch what ever it is, even if its a commercial. I wish I could start again, but I wrecked my knees riding and now, when I do I cant walk for a couple of days. My daughter is finaly old enough to start, I am going to put her lessons this summer I am so excited!!!!!

condogirl.....I'm familiar with that one....caledon equestrian centre in palgrave. haven't made it to any shows there yet but will make a point in checking it out this summer. I remember pony club days!! I didn't compete with my horse but I was a helper for my girlfriend when she would go to the events. they always had so many fun activities to get everyone involved besides just the riding!! My mom was never involved with my riding...I'd go with my friends and the owners of our barn would always come to our shows to cheer us on!

condogirl....I did compete for a few summers at some local schooling shows and then I was involved in dressage for a while, but I found I didn't enjoy it as much as I had thought I would - competition that is. I always wanted to try eventing but didn't have the right horse for it at the time. I can imagine it must be exciting for you and your family to watch your brother! Does he compete at Spruce Meadows? I would love to take a trip there one year....it looks fantastic! Years ago a girlfriend and I went to the Kentucky Horse Park to see the Rolex 3 day event ....the place is huuuge!!!

My brother now lives in belguim where he runs a barn, buying and selling horses. He compets in both hunter and jumper over there. I dont belive he has riden at Sprece Medows, but we have been there a few times it is amazing, we also have been to the Kentucky Horse park we went when we were kids. It was an amazing place to visit. My bother and I both did eventing with pony club when we were kids, it was always a lot of fun, my mom didnt think so, she hated watching us ride of those big logs and such out in the feild. I am not sure where you live 2blues, but near bolton there is a horse park, that has A level shows all summer. Its a great place, they have 3 or 4 rings on the go all the time. Even though I dont ride anymore I still go up a few times a summer.

Her Mom was so excited when she called from Europe and the other is on the womens curling team. Can you imagine how excited that town is everyone in the town knows these girls as they went to the schools there. The Curling team is from Calgary.

2blues, sounds like a plan to me!!!! Go for it!!

I really don't spend a lot of money on habits or hobbies (although my hubby will tell you otherwise!! ;) ), so I figure it's not too unreasonable to spend some money on something that I've wanted my whole life. I spent quite a bit of money in the beginning, buying the supplies that I needed. But now I've got pretty much everything I need, so the only real expenses are board and vet & farrier visits -- which don't happen too often. Hopefully, Rosa will stay healthy and not step on any more nails (which she did last summer). I'm still amazed that large animal vets charge less than small animal vets.

I can't take credit for Rosa's name, she came with it :) Actually, our pre-named pets are luckier than the pets we named -- the pre-named pets have normal names, the two pets we named are Chibbley and Squirt :)

you're absolutely right smoodgie!!! I hadn't thought of it that way before....hmmmm maybe I'll make dh a nice supper tonight and show him all that money we're saving on smokes and how I have the perfect way to invest that money..... :D :D

btw Rosa is a lovely name....I've always liked "people" names for animals

smoodgie's picture
smoodgie

Yep, her name is Rosa. She's doing great -- assuming she made it through the the -20 degrees last night!! ;) It's so much more enjoyable having people to talk with and ride with, and to have people who know way more about horses than I do to give me advice and help me out.

I hear ya -- when I was a kid, I thought being an adult would be fun, because I'd be able to do everything I want to do and stay up late. Boy, was I wrong!! Well, OK, I can stay up late, but the rest, not so much!!! ;)

I bought my very first horse 1-1/2 years ago. I kept her at a friend's hobby farm for about a year. I didn't have to pay board, but it was a lot of work and lonely and probably not good for me or my horse. I moved her to a proper boarding stable last September, and it's made a world of difference. We're both much happier now :)

I hope you'll be able to get another horse one day soon :) It's not cheap -- but on the other hand, board costs about as much as a pack-a-day smoking habit!! And owning a horse is better for you :)

smoodgie....I had 2 horses but had to give it all up when ds was born and I became a sahm.....very expensive and I felt guilty asking dh to foot the bill for me. ds is 8 now so hopefully when he's a bit older I'll be able to find work in town here for some extra money and I'll get right back into it. I've considered even going back and taking private lessons, since it's been over 8 years I'm probably rusty...but it always seems something gets in the way...now the car needs new tires...next we'll need a new mattress....etc...etc.... growing up isn't as much fun as I thought it would be when I was a kid :( :D :D

Of course am not "inportant", the olympics is more IMPORTANT, after the summer football ( soccer ) world cup of course, which I believe Canada won't be taking part in.

I believe that is the big sporting event most people round the world, are waiting for, especially if you are in the GTA ontario and other big major multicultural cities round Canada?
