OMG! Paint spill on my Berber carpet!

This is more of a rant than anything, but still a horror story to share. First I will say that I am not the type to promote products usually but this was amazing so far....

Here is what happened...

My Dh was watching my kids (2 & 5) for an evening, he was otherwise busy lets say for a short time. In that time my kids thought it would be fun to paint their toe nails. Not with nail polish, no laytex paint, which one did they choose? The hot pink quart I had stashed in the master bedroom closet. I usually keep my touch up paint there. I know what you must be thinking and the paint was given to me by my MIL and was a maybe to use as an accent color only in the kids room. Did I mention both are girls. lol. Long story short they brought the can down the stairs and oops spilled it on the last 5 steps and continued to spill it onto my front hallway onto the laminate flooring. Oh and it was also fun to ride a couple of cars through it on the floor while it was there messy!

We had only just replaced the carpet on the staris not even a year ago. A really nice taupe berber carpet! So I of course got to salvage the stairs with Oxy clean, man it really works well I must say! I just feel sick about it though. I still have a small piece of replacement carpet but not enough to do the whole 5 stairs. Nor the money to fix it! Crap! If anyone can learn anything from this nightmare it's worth sharing!

Thanks for listening, I will post before and after pics!

still working!!!!!!!!!

It feels like forever since it happened, I have done more than my share of scrubbing. I have sore knuckles to prove it! I do have good news... winning colors did take out the remainder of the pink paint! OMG! If you have kids, it is a must to have in the home.. thank you thank you! I cannot say it enough for all the advice and support. Yes they are just stairs but I love them anyways...lol

Try the Oxyclean again tomorrow. They say stubborn stains require several applications. Then if it is still there go get an estimate to get the carpet replaced. You might not have to get the entire length of the stairs done even, those carpet installers do a great job of hiding seams. If you still have some remnants of the carpet maybe they will only charge you for the install.
I cannot think of a nicer Christmas gift for your DH :D

I feel for you but I think I would call my insurance guy and see what coverage you have. I can't imagine you will get it out enough to be able to live with. I know when my Dad spilled wine on his carpet they tried everything under the sun and finally called a carpet place and they claimed they could have gotten it out if it had been untouched but after all the cleaners were used they wouldn't even try. They claimed it made it impossible to get out with all the chemicals in the rug.

I am so tired of scrubbing, it isn't funny. I have tried using the spot bot thingy, my MIL swears by it? If you ask me it made more of a mess.. it's really a crap shoot from here. I will give some of the suggestions a try, it's all cheaper than replacing at this point. Thanks for the words of encouragement!

I know I will laugh at it someday..........

p.s. my fingers felt tingly after all that scrubbing! lol

There is also a product I've had grerat success with, called "Winning Colours". It is specifically for paint and stain, and is safe to use on people too.
You can get it at Home Depot - it wasn't with the cleaners when I got it, though, they had it with the paint products. I had dried latex paint in my son's rug, and it totally removed it!
Good luck getting the rest of the pink out...looking at your pictures gave me palpitations!

The other thing you may want to try is an enzyme cleaner like Nature's Miracle (pet stores) or Folex (most other stores that carry any sort of cleaning supplies). They work much like Oxy clean but I have found I have more success with them and they don't require the rinsing Oxy does. it's just squirt and rub with your finger, blot up. I used it when I had some eggplant coloured paint on a white carpet and got a lot of it out. I didn't try very hard either since the rug was getting pulled out anyway, but it's worth a try.

I feel bad for you Cheerio ....Have you thought of going through your insurance company?,,,the only darn thing is there is usually a $500.00 deductable....unless the carpet people can include it in their estimate;)
What about trying mineral spirits ?

WOW!!!!! Laugh or cry or both!
Red undertoned paints are hard to get out. After using Oxyclaen try Spot Shot. It may pull up the rest of the paint. The fortunate thing is with new carpet it may just all come out. FINGERS CROSSED for you!

I am guilty of same, store touch ups of paints in closets of rooms in which they were used. Not a good idea!!! I remember the time I spilt a gallon of high gloss varathan on rug when redoing bannister:eek: . Rug was dark brown and very stiff in one area but eventually replaced hallway with hardwood flooring.

 That's a tough one to clean up!
Store your paint cans in the garage or basement.

YIKES!!
I wouldn't know whether to cry or laugh (Likely wouldn't be laughing yet!!)

It is funny though with the girsl using latex to paint their nails:)

So....who is in more trouble...the girls or dear hubbie;)
