I cannot for the life of me figure out why my colored towels all have orangey-coloured spots on them! Apparently, this is a common phenomenon for a lot of people. Does anybody know what it's from?

This bleach stain also started showing up on my towels. I finally realized that it was showing up on towels my husband was using and not on towels for me or my son. We realized that after my husband brushed his teach he would wipe his mouth. If you toothpaste has a whitener in it that is the culprit. The bleach in the whitener bleaches out your towels. I do not wipe my face off after brushing my teeth because I have already put my makeup on. My 13 year old wipes his mouth with his sleeve! Certain skin creams with AHA alpha hydroxy contain a skin bleach and when you wipe hands off on the towel after applying this can also bleach them.
Paris,
This happened to me too; but with another brand. I am ashamed to say, but at the time I blamed our housekeeper.
Low and behold, there I am at the store where I bought them and another customer is returing her 'orange spotted' towels! I couldn't believe it. She was given a full refund, no questions asked. The clerk said 'we've seen this many times before'.........
Take them back, I doubt they'll be surprized.

lilly
I think Foxxy is right and you should take them back. You could always call the store you purchased them from to see if they have had others returned. If they have defects, they will have the whole lot of them coming back probably.
You might also ask for the sales reps phone number as they would be able to tell you as well.
That in one load with other brands only the H&H towels show spots.
I have had spots from grease (was very old washer) but they were on everything in that load.
Maybe others have had the same problems. If it is the Bay they usually do not give you trouble about returns. I bought a bath mat and after one wash it lost some of the fibres, they were stuck inside the wash tub. The Bay refunded the money.
the load only had towels in them...all of them were H&H towels..none of the others came out with these orange spots!
Maybe I should take it back, but do you think they would let me return it?
I really don't think it's my washer.
are the spots only on one item and were washed in the same load?
It may be a defect in the cotton fabric of the towels. Something in the fabric reacting.
I would take them back as maybe others have had the same problems.
It's so upsetting...we just got brand new H&H towels, only washed twice so far, and already my chocolate brown towel has orange spots on it :( My washer and dryer are brand new (7 months old) and I am using Tide High Efficiency detergent (the instructions said use HE).
How could it be rust if the washer/dryer is so new? I just reread my old post and no, it is not bleach as I never use bleach!
What else could it be? Maybe I should call Whirlpool and ask them!
I''m not certain about this, but if you use any products with benzoyl peroxide it it may be the cause. This product has a tendency to bleach fabrics.
sounds like it might be rust spots.
A few years ago when we were renting a house, the washer that came with the house had been previously used to wash oily clothes. All our clothes came out with a terrible gasoline smell and oil spots even after many loads and rinses. We had tried alot of products to get rid of it and then my MIL found a product that was actually used for cleaning dishwashers called Glisten. We tried that and it worked! Maybe it would work for rust too.
I think safeway carries it just in the aisle with the dishwasher detergents.
If your washer is not new then I would try this but if it is still under warranty then maybe don't try this incase it nulls your warranty since this product isn't really for washers specifically.
turned out to be rust

Rust from either your washer or dryer. Buy a rust remover (in the stain remover section). If it works, then you know what those orange stains are.
I'm not sure how old our dryer is....it came with the house when we bought it last year. They don't look that old! I'll have to check into it.....thanks!
how old is it? i remember when we moved in to our house the previous owner told us that the dryer is nearing the end of it's life and that we may notice "burn" spots, particularly on the lighter pieces. not sure what it's from but we did replace it immediately. it think it was 20-30 years old!
I think it may be bleach which has splashed on the clothes somehow. That has happened to me before also. You tend to notice it more on the darker clothes. I hate when that happens especially to something you really like.
I hope it is not oil leaking from your machine into the wash water. Maybe have it checked out.
