What kind of car would you guys recommend in terms of, well, everything really, safety, insurance, reliability etc?
I really really want the Ford Explorer, but not willing to spend the money on it, so I'm thinking of just a sedan. Possibly Honda.
Also, anybody have any experience in buying extended warranty on the car? Not sure what other questions I'd like answers to :D Can you tell I don't know anything about cars?
Thanks for any advice.

I'm happy for you Aan. Just keep your hands on the wheel, and try to resist the urge to wave to everyone. Oh, and wear comfy shoes, you'll be parking half a mile away from the other cars in parking malls till you get your first little scratch or dent.
Enjoy her,or him, or shim, whatever!!!

woohoo. I finally found the perfect Echo. 2 years power train, perfect shape, new tires, yadda yadda. I'm turning into a car freak, that's all I've been able to converse about this week. So it ends here :D Just thought I should finish this thread :D

......need to be excited when you are driving a car, or you'll be pulling over every 5 min. and jumping in the back seat, even when you're by yourself. You need to put on your serious face, and get into a serious car. Buy the Saturn!!! It can double as a spare bedroom when guests come over!!

I loved the Echo, but the tin can was rusted out. Went to look at a Saturn, drove it, a miserable car compared to the cute little Echo. Still considering the Saturn, price, reliability, safety etc, but it doesn't get me all hyped up. We'll see...

Can't you at least be happy that I compared you to Audrey Hepburn, Geesh!!!
If you hold out till Christmas, do you think you'll get it, instead of perfume or diamonds or whatever your DH gets you?

Poo on you! You think all I could grace would be a 20 year old Lada? Gee, thanks :D

I've been looking all over today, and all I want for Christmas is a Toyota Echo! That's what I want and no one can change my mind! But I can't find one at a "good" price though, except for one with dents in it, boohoo. I might as well start looking at the suv's if I have to pay over $12000 for a used 5 year old :(

You know how Lynda reeves always talks about "tension" in home design, well why can't that extend to our cars as too. For example, I always picture you as the Audrey Hepburn type, and what would be more surprising than to find Audrey Hepburn type people driving old beat up junky cars. So head on down to the srap yard and pick up an old rusted Gremlin hatcback. Voila,,,instant tension and tres chique!!!!!:D

Dreamer, I'm happy to hear it went well with your DP's son!! Thank god for the french ( I think..?) I'd love to have a Saab, I am all for them, but my god woman do you think I am made of money? :D

I looked a bit yesterday, couldn't really find anything so the search continues today. I got it in my head I want a Toyota Echo now....or a Jetta :D perhaps a bit brainwashed.

Norm, you make it sound so easy to buy a car :D but I'm glad you're comfortable with what you got in terms of safety for your daughter, I love those cars, I looked at a few of them yesterday, but again, I'm cheap when it comes down to it :D

I'm so glad everything turned out O.K. for those boys. Sounds like they had their guardian angels along for the ride!!! It surely is a parent's worst nightmare. I always say a prayer everytime my DD pulls out of the driveway.

My partner and I drive Fords. We "have to" - his brother owns a Ford dealership. We are happy enough with our cars, but if you have a safety concern, I would recommend a SAAB. My partner's son and 2 friends were in a bad accident in a SAAB : the driver fell asleep on the highway and hit a truck parked on the shoulder. They should have died, and I think they would have but for the SAAB. The front end of the SAAB was demolished. The passenger compartment, however, was just bent. My partner's son had facial injuries caused by his face hitting the rear end of the truck, but the other two boys were hardly injured at all. When my kids are old enough to drive, I want them in a SAAB.

(By the way, I also learned to love plastic surgeons from this incident. My partner's son has only a few, barely visible scars)

How about a Hummer? :D I know how you feel about visibility, one of my main reasons for wanting an SUV to begin with. From what I understand the Honda's and Toyotas are cars people seem to be pretty happy with. I guess I just have to get out there and have a look at what is available, I could sit and research this until the end of time...

......two new cars last year and the year before. An Impala and a Cavalier. They were a great deal, very comfortable and reliable.

After getting to the point where we were ready to give up on finding the right car, I happened to come across the EL on the Acura web site. It's essentially a Honda Civic, but it comes with better standard features -- leather seats, A/C, sunroof, power door locks and windows, alarm, heated front seats, heated mirrors....

We bought ours new in April 2001, and have barely had any trouble with it. The battery had to be charged at one point (after it had sat in the garage over the winter) and I think it needed a minor repair at its last annual "check up" at Acura.

Good luck!!

It IS frustrating. I cannot for the life of me decide what car to buy, I agree the Honda's are expensive too. Now that I've decided to buy a car I want to spend as little as possible on it, which isn't exactly how to go about it, but...
There are so many things to consider and if you read the safety ratings and repair ratings, Hondas aren't the best out there but Saturn. But I don't want a Saturn :( Not sure why, I think the name puts me off :D

I really don't know all the questions to ask when buying it either, Schatzi's advice on warranty is a very good one, thank you! :)

Dyn, I wouldn't mind a Jetta, but they're expensive too :D
Not sure what I expected paying for the car, but I'd like to stay under $10 000 if possible.

Honda for us too! Dh swears by them. I have always liked the Jetta but am stuck in a minivan for the time being:(
