Our house is probably forty years old, and aside from painting the doors and shutters, I don't recall any work being done on it since. After years of putting our money into other things, we have finally decided to do a complete over haul - siding, roof, windows, doors, etc.
Medium sized home that looks somewhat like you see in my poor drawing above, lol. The windows arent perfectly to scale, but just there for an idea. We currently have a peak above our door, but will be removing it as it is old and pretty beat up. Not replacing it for now.
We're currently having an issue with siding color. We were leaning towards a more conservative color with Brownstone (http://www.reginawindow.com/images/Steel%20Siding%20color/Brownstone.gif), but later fell in love with a very dark grey called Granite. I'm just worried the granite would be too radical compared to the surrounding houses. To our left is a house with Wicker siding similar to this color: (http://lh6.ggpht.com/-A_xyqwuJQBM/R-vtLm9MK5I/AAAAAAAABRU/s0r9dmTSt0Q/IM... ) and to our right we have an open space of grass, followed by a white colored house. Across the street is more of a cream color.
So I guess what I'm asking is should we be putting too much stock into blending in with our neighbours? And also, would a dark gray house look too dreary with no bells and whistles such as the peak? We will be having white shutters or thicker trim around the windows (yet to be decided). All trim will be white (eaves, gutters etc) and the door. The grey would be similar to this: (http://www.decorpad.com/photos/2010/08/24/t_11f48f7fbfd1.jpg)
Thanks so much!

I also like the blue-grey siding I see around town!
Definitely the grey!
Hello OverwhelmedHome,
I like the grey!

I love the grey. I would do what you like and not worry about the neighbours.
I'm with Northern Miner with the grey colour also, grey is a great neutral colour and with the white trim will add nice street appeal.
I would probably add a different colour to the front door to add some interest until you can add the peak above the front door.
I very much like the idea of the dark grey. It adds character and with the white shutters I think it would really pop. I also think putting a new peak over your door would be a good investment and add more appeal, although it doesn't have to be done right away. It will give you a chance to look around at various designs to find the one you like.
