Ouch! I was mowing the lawn, bumped a tree, and immediatley felt like I was on fire!!!! There's a friggin hornets nest in my tree! (unlike in the movies) I screamed and ran for the pool, but luckily they didn't follow me. Only got stung twice, one on my leg, other on my arm. But holy mackeral, can it sting! Not allergic thank goodness.
Well, that's it for me today, I'm finished for the day! God I'm shaking!

Tick that off in my Canadian wildlife experience book! Stung by hornets:check

Well dh came home, grabbed the can of insect repellent (before I could tell him Jenjen said to use hornet spray), and sprayed the nest close up. Brave man!

He then knocked it off its branch and then ran! haha, not to the pool, though!

He went back and sprayed any hornets flying around, and then picked up the part of the nest with all the eggs and grubs wriggling inside, their little heads peeking out the top of each pocket, and threw it on the BBQ! My boys were fascinated at the poor grubs cooking away and popping. I stayed away. Gross.

Give a hand to my brave hero :applaud:

Yuck! Glad you are o.k. though. I hate wasp/hornet season!

It's been a few years since a nest was built on our place, but last year they had one in the neighbour's tree on one side of us, and the other neighbour had them getting into their siding AND making a few nests on the roof overhang. We lent one neighbour the spray bomb stuff still in our shed, and it worked well, applied in the evening when the nest activity dies down.

I try to watch for nests but it's easy to miss up in the trees. The last one I caught while still small was as big as a cherry, on a branch of a mum that had died back over winter.

. For best results, spray in early morning or early evening when insect activity is minimal. Stand safe distance from nest and not directly underneath. Hold can as upright as possible while spraying.

2. Point spray opening toward nest with wind at your back. Spray until nest is thoroughly saturated to kill the entire nest population. Residual action will kill wasps and hornets that return to the nest.

3. Wait at least 24 hours before removing the nest.

ooh, I like that. 'Right up the hole'! :biglol:
The b#gger on the outside is busy making the nest bigger, adding another layer! Like it isn't big enough already!

Can I spray from, say...inside the pool?!

good thing cameras come with zoom...you are one brave girl...and to get a pic with one the outside of the nest patroling...WOW!!!....purple heart for you Cat...no get yourself or get DH to pick up from the hardware store a can of this stuff...it shoots really far so you don't have to get close and it's a steady stream that comes out so you can get it right up the hole of the nest

yeh, I'm laughing now, lol! I was typing so fast I also meant to say ' they didn't follow me (unlike in the movies)' :D

Pool was cold too

Well the lawnmower is staying just were I left it, right next to the tree. I can't do any housework either, lol

When I went outside to check if all was clear, even a stupid mosquito made me yelp, thinking it was a hornet looking for me, lol
I have the hibbie-jeebies now.

By the way there is no stinger. Just a hole, a spot of blood, and a whole lot of swelling.

A cup of tea and some emotional-eating is in order, I think!

If you mix baking soda and water in to a paste and put it on the sting it will get the stinger out, and take the burn and itch out of the sting...
