We recently moved into a centre hall style home. When you walk in the door, there are dark wood stairs going up straight ahead and a hall going towards the back of the house. The dining room is immediately on the left and the living room is immediately on the right—both through fairly wide archways (approx 4 1/2 feet--no doors). The living room and the dining room both have large, north facing windows. All of these rooms/halls have wainscoting. I would like to repaint all of these rooms, but I have a few questions:
1. Should to keep the wainscoting the same colour everywhere? Would you paint the baseboards the same colour as the wainscoting?
2. The windows cut through the wainscoting, so would you paint the window trim the same colour as the wainscoting.
3. Our furniture and rug in the living room so far is earthy greens and warm browns. We like these types of colours. Can you make a recommendation for paint colours, finishes, etc.?
4. I was hoping to do the dining room walls in a more lively colour, like a wine or berry colour above the wainscoting, but I am not sure if I should choose something more neutral to complement the hall and living room and then add the colour I crave with draperies and other accents.
Any suggestions would be great!
