paint...after you are finished...

What do you folks do with your paint once you are finished painting your room/project? Do you save the remainder? At what point do you throw paint out (or recycle)?

I have quite a collection for various reasons and some people are telling me I shouldn't keep it. I can't help but think it might be useful but maybe I am needing to rethink and purge or maybe they are nuts. I do throw it out if it is bad, I have used paint I had hanging around as recently as when I sold my house so it did come in handy.

So give me your perspective please...how many paint cans do you have hanging around?

and use them to paint the vacation rental houses...I mixed the remnants of nine pails together (yeah, nine) to paint the dining room at the one house and it came out a lovely soft taupe...i've had so many renters ask for the colour name LOL

The rooms at those houses take a real sh*t-kicking over the summer months -- kids and crayons, etc etc Plus they like to rearrange furniture--can you tell i'm getting ready for this year's onslaught???

I have too many nearly empty, full, partioally full paint cans. Why, I keep them I don't know. Always think I am needing to touch up. I guess I should list the colours I have used and despose of the paint properly.

I left the paint for the other house at the other house and I still have about 18 gallons here, plus tins of various sprays, small cans of this and that. I'd say half of it is untinted virgin (you know bought on sale thinking it can be tinted when I decide what to paint) or some of my moms plain old white, or fence and other paint I thought I'd use but didn't get around to it, primers, glazes, shellac, varnish, good old blacks etc. and so on.

I did take about a dozen various sized tins to the recycle the other day but that still leaves all the rest. I don't know, to me it doesn't seem odd to have a lot of paint around and I never really questioned it before but having someone tell me I should hardly have any has made me wonder what other folks have. Seeing these numbers you've posted is confirming that I can keep my paint and not feel like a hoarder.

You could always custom-mix your own colour(s) with the leftovers!!

I probably have over 20 gallons of paint stored away in the basement  It's always good to have paint around for touch-ups -- but I have way more than I need, I think!! There must be some sort of small container that's well-sealed and could hold just enough paint for touch-ups, so you can toss the big cans away.

I painted the laundry room with leftover paint from some other rooms, so that's an option -- use it to paint small spaces, like a closet.

I think that since you've moved, you don't really have a reason to keep those paint cans, since all those colours are on the walls at the other house.

I know, it's nice to have some for projects, but you are a little strapped for space. Why not make a deal with yourself to part with any can of paint that is less than 3/4 full? Any less than that probably won't be enough to paint a whole room or piece of furniture anyway.

Does this help you out?

I have a bit of paint left over for every room in the house that I have painted. I keep it for annual touch-ups, sometimes I need it more than once a year to cover up dings and dents in the walls (kids!). I will throw it out if it goes dry or smells, but otherwise I need it!

I have a hard time throwing out any leftover paint..unless of course it starts to smell or something. I have just counted all the cans I have in my laundry room...16 gallons (some I haven't used yet..others just leftovers) and 9 quarts.
