I was going to wait to post, hoping to have more of a "finished" look to our kitchen but I think it will be a longer process than I originally planned for...So, here are the original pictures taken of our kitchen, the evening when we received the keys to our house.
I think the cabinets are original to the home. (Built in mid 80's) The grain was awful.
Also, the walls were painted a light yellow with peach undertones, and the wall housing the bay window was painted out an odd deep blue. I think the owner was going for a French Country look. The window coverings certainly seemed to be this style. But not to our liking...

saw something on pottery barn site that reminds your side board. if you'll decide to keep it, maybe you can add some shelves and put there your blue accents - bottles, vases, china. there are some accents in pier1 - did you chekc them out?
Thanks so much, Nana24. I am excited to see your cabinets! Will you post pictures?
Funny enough, I escaped to the mall last night to look for kitchen decor. And everywhere I looked I found beautiful apple green accessories. BUT I want blue accessories. LOL!
I steer away from glass top tables. I have a four year old son, and well, I'm not comfortable with them. I was thinking of having a piece of stone cut for the surface of the sideboard. I think it would work as a good preparation surface. We'll see.
I need to "step away" from the whole decorating mindset for a while to gather up some clarity. Funny how this process can become overwhelming! I've been living in the "I want" place too long. ;)
Anyway, please post pics of your kitchen! :D
Your kitchen looks fabulous. Having just finished painting mine I can appreciate all your hard work. You did a great job. I agree with the other post lime green would be a nice contrast. If you like your dresser the wood tone you could add some shelves to mimick a Welsh dresser with display dishes, or you could paint it the same as the walls & I would get a piece of glass cut for the top for an extra work surface. How would a glass top bistro table work in your window area with just one seat for you to enjoy a coffee or friend to chat with you while your cooking.
You did an incredible job Patty..I love everything you did....it it so fresh and bright....I think you could paint the sideboard any colour and it would look good.
Good stuff, anf you seem to have not taken tto long, either. you've given me the mojo to do mine - but I think I need to get my right arm out of this cast first (9 days and counting . . .)!
I would paint the cabinet a completely different colour, I have a thing for red right now ....
Nice work. That really did take a tired kitchen and bring it right up to speed nicely. I think before you worry about the colour of the sideboard you need to have that arm wrestling match and decide how you are using the space.
Awsome!!! Love the transformation. What a change and the colours are great.
very nice transformation! congrats!
is it big enough space to have both sideboard and dining set there?
i can see the dilemma you may have - storage and having a nice place to eat...
how about replacing the sideborad with bench with storage, then you'll have seating + you can hide some kitchen stuff that is not very often used, it also saves some space. if the sideboard is priority then ithink it's better to be painted light colour and for dining set actually get petite bistro set?
it always tricky to work with little space because you think of multifunctionality.
good luck with what ever you'll choose. keep pictures coming :)
Awesome transformation! I would paint the cabinet the willow as well to match the lower cabinents. I like the green accent idea.
Actually, as for the light fixture, I guess it is the one we see peeking out of the top of one of the pictures and it is in the middle of the room. You would not be able to put a low hanging light there unless you put a narrow island under it(movable?) with a spot for 2 stools and voila!!!! more cabinet and counter top space and satisfiy hubby with an eating place all in one shot. Of course, the shelf unit will probably have to go then but you will gain storage space with island anyway and that opens up the light fixture choices too. Maybe 2 or 3 pendant lights or even the new 'Dandilion' light from Ikea.
Aww, thanks everyone! It is true. Just paint can make such a big difference.
Smoodge & Chickadee, the green accent colour is a good idea. I was leaning towards a blue-grey though...But maybe I should experiment with the green.
Again, many thanks! Really, I don't think I would have taken on this project without this forum! :)
Looks fantastic...what a difference paint can make! :)
WOW! I love the transformation! Looks great!
Fabulous!!!! Isn't it amazing what some paint can do!!!!
Looks 'gooderist'. ;)
Wow!! Your "new" kitchen looks great!! A HUGE improvement over the "old" kitchen!!
I'd paint the sideboard Willow to keep it consistent with the colour of your lower cabinets.
Home Depot sells some nice black iron & crystal chandeliers. Might be worth checking out.
I think a bright apple or chartreuse green would be a great accent colour. A silver basket or bowl like the Stockholm from Ikea filled with limes or Granny Smith apples would look great on your countertop.
I know how muck work it is to paint cabinets -- two big thumbs up to you for taking on the job and doing it so well :)
Congratulations! I really like your newly painted kitchen. Colour choices are warm and inviting. Which paint chip did not match the paint colour? I am thinking the willow green would be nice on your cupboard.
We replaced the window panels with 2" faux wood white blinds in hopes of letting more light into the space as well as decluttering the windows.
Although it is an eat in kitchen, I am not so sure that I'm interested in bringing in a small dining set. My husband would like this, but because the room is not large, I like the space to move about when cooking. So, the arm wrestle is on...
The walls were painted in ICI's Toasty Grey. The ceiling was painted in ICI's Minimalist White. The upper cabinets were painted in ICI's Natural White. And the bottom cabinets were painted in Benjamin Moore's Willow. I should point out that the BM paint does not match the paint chip -- the actual colour is a deep grey taupe, not the deep brown of the chip. In any other situation, I would have been angry, but I actually like the colour.
It took a long time, but it was well worth it. I love my new kitchen. Hopefully, the paint (100% acrylic) will stand the test of time.
I am on the search for a few design accessories to tie in the colour story and add contrast to the open shelving on each side of the sink. We plan to add crown moulding to the ceiling, too. I do still have to find a black iron kitchen light, and I am at odds on what to do with our kitchen sideboard.
I need the extra storage space. I may paint it but I not sure if I should go with Willow or Natural White. Any suggestions?
