I've taken into my possession an old country-style rectangle table and set of chairs. The chair seats and table top surface are the typical original pine with the turned spindles and legs painted a navy blue.
I'd like to update this by painting it a matte wrought-iron black so as to keep the rustic feel, but I'd like to lose the pine all together.
Any suggestions for painting the table surface so that it is still food-safe? Have people still typically used a melamine paint? Is a special varnish required over top?
I've painted the legs of the table already with a melamine, but if that won't work for the table top then I need to adjust as necessary.
