We built this banquette last weekend and I want to paint it white next weekend. Its sitting outside and its new wood. What do I need to do before I paint it? Sealer? Primer? Any brand of paint you recommend?

'weather' I mean dry enough. It will blister if it isn't.
The banquette does sit under a small roof so we used non-treated wood as it wouldn't be exposed to the elements as much. We used 2x3s, plywood, and pine for the construction.
We also thought that it had to be painted ASAP. I'll ask the paint guy just to be sure. I hadn't thought of using opaque stain dustbunnydiva - thanks for that suggestion. I'll have to check out that option.
Coffeelady - I'll check out what cushions HomeSense has to offer. Yes, there is room to store the cushions in the banquette. I also saw some great outdoor fabrics at Designer Fabrics and may get them custom-made instead.
Thanks for all your help!
Are you sure about that? You have to let pressure treated weather but with non treated I've always understood it has to be painted ASAP (as long as it's dry).this is something to consider with this thing being a new build, is it dry enough wood? If it's too damp whatever you put on it won't adhere as well.
Meanwhile, if the banquette is protected from the weather you don't have to worry too much. You can use a stain or a paint. If you don't want peeling paint, you have two choices, use a really good primer like Zinsser or use a stain. Paint on it's own just doesn't stand up well enough and generally ends up peeling within a couple of years..
Opaque stain looks like paint but no primer required (or recommended). It won't peel but will wear away over time which is a lot easier to deal with when it comes to prepping for a new coat.Regular stain is the same for work but allows the wood grain to show through.
If this is in a protected area (out of the sun especially) you probably don't need to be as fussy about brand of paint/stain.
What type of wood is it. Ideally for outdoor 'wood' it's best to let it weather for some time before you paint.
Hi,
It is a nice banquette. Does it have storage for cushions etc. under the top? Is it under cover?
It is difficult to answer your question w/o knowing the type of wood used. Your options are to stain it or paint it. Either way, what is used needs to be for exteriors and weather proof.Any paint store, Home Depot paint dep't etc. can answer your question.
If you are going to put a cushion or cushions on it, sunbrella products are best for protection against the weather. They have a good selection at Home Sense and Winners.
Have fun!
