This may seem an odd question? But what the heck! I recieved an old ceramic vase from MIL that has horrid colors but a decent shape and otherwise fine condition. So I'm thinking of bringing it out of the closet LOL! Can I paint it with Latex paint? Maybe??? Or even buff it us a bit first?
Curious, and no she wouldn't be offended she may take it back for herself!! LOL

those are two ceramic paints I've used (both should be available at places like Michaels) and both were good. Ceramcoat doesn't require baking but is a 3 step process (base coat, paint, glaze). I wouldn't put either of them in the dishwasher but they are pretty durable. Ceramcoat absolutely ends up looking like glazed ceramic once it's done so it's great for wall tiles and such too.
You can also get a good primer like Zinsser and prime the ceramic and then paint with whatever you like. Still not good for the dishwasher, but will stick and is pretty durable.
Basically once a ceramic has a shiny glaze on it you have something that will be hard to get anything to stick perfectly too but you can do it especially with a good primer like Zinsser. If you have a dull ceramic piece (not glazed) you can paint it with pretty much anything. I have a lamp I painted with craft paints about 10 years ago and that paint is still on there.
You can buy the paints for glass and ceramic that can be baked at art stores. They often have brands you won't find in craft stores.
Don't use latex - it will peel off like skin and spray paint peels off in the dishwasher.
Michaels carries an opaque ceramic paint that you can bake on to your ceramics in your oven at home. It's great stuff and it will never peel or come off no matter how you clean it.
In a recent issue of Style At Home, there was an article about painting old ceramic pieces -- so for sure it can be done!! I can't remember how they said to do it (prep work, what kind of paint, etc.), but if I can find the magazine at home, I'll check the article for you.
Delta has a craft paint called Permenamel, which may be of interest. Here is a link to projects done with it, some on glass and some on ceramic. It doesn't sound as though you'd go as colourful as some projects here, but the product may be of interest to you.

Sounds like a plan! Thanks ladies!
Cheers!!
Canadian Tire carries a spray paint that will cover anything without having to sand the object beforehand....it's great and dries fast too.
Ideally I would spray paint it
