Painting/Staining stair banister

Hi again,This is my first post in awhile.  I became discouraged during all the switches/log in problems going on and just recently rediscovered the forum.  It is nice to see some familiar names still posting.  I can't seem to find any old posts.  I know that there were lots on this topic before......?  AnyhowI dislike my Oak on my stairs and would like to know what you all think I should do?  Paint Black or Stain Dark?I have included pictures of my staircase and also a picture of a sample stained oak door that I had.I was thinking of painting/staining the railing and also where the spindles go into at the bottom.  The flat oak panel that sits on the wall I was thinking of painting out wall colour!  What do you all think.  I really value your opinions.  I am worried about painting the oak as opposed to staining because everyone I talk to says  "You can't paint over nice wood" and "Oak is going to come back in style".  Will I regret it if I paint it black?

Hi isey,
I think painting out the oak strip up the stairs is a good idea and I also noticed a wood oak strip into your other room above the fireplace and I would paint that out as well.

I like a black railing with white spindles.  You won't be sorry!

The pictures are great!  Thank you!  When I clicked on them they did get bigger and your staircase looks amazing!  Just what I was hoping for.  Did you use one coat of primer and one coat of paint?  What do you think that I should do with the big flat oak part on the wall?  I was thinking of painting it out wall colour......Again thank you, amazing!   Any tips on how to make the job easier of more efficient would be much appreciated.

Hi isey
This is my second attempt to post a picture!  So eveything was given a sand to rough it up so the primer would adhere well.  I used Fresh Start primer (Benjamin Moore), the black railing is Jet Black (Benjamin Moore), the white spindles are Decorator White (Benjamin Moore) to match the rest of the trim in the house.

Hue:  Thanks so much for your reply.  Do you have any pictures you could post?  It sounds like yours is quite like mine.  Did you sand it?  Did you prime it?  How many coats of paint and what was the brand and colour name that you chose?  Thanks so much!

I have also painted my staircase with white for the spindles and black for the railing as well as around the bottom of the spindles where the wood meets the carpet.  I have never regreted painting the wood.  I think it looks cleaner and fresher.  My only regret was that I used semi gloss for the black but wished I went with a high gloss.  The semi gloss is fine it just isn't glossy enough for me!  I think that is a personal choice.

Hi againAll of the major brands (Para, Sico, Beauti-Tone, General Paint, etc.) have a true black, if you're looking for the same one as Stacey's try Benjamin Moore's "Black" in the Aura line.Hope that helps! Here's a link to the site:http://bit.ly/7YgIbV

I was thinking that I would use a semi-gloss black on the hand rail and leave the spindles white.  I was hoping for some input from others as to what black would be best.

Hi Isey! Welcome back, I hope you haven't been encountering any more login problems. Just thought I'd share a recent blog from design editor Stacey Smithers - she recently painted her staircase as well but went for a black railing and white spindles. And if you are doing it yourself and haven't painted a staircase before, I can tell you from her stories that you should plan on it taking a lot longer than you think! http://www.houseandhome.com/blogs/house-home-daily/decorating-finds/hall-paint-wallpaperGood luck with your decision!Andrea
