Patio question

HHassist's picture

My hubby and I are planning to build a 3-level deck in our backyard. The 1st level is in place and is accessed from the patio door in the kitchen. The 2nd level will be about 4-6 steps down from the 1st level. Both these levels will be wood. We're undecided about what to do with the lowest level. It will probably be a few steps down from the 2nd wood level, and a step up from ground level (8"-12"). We were originally planning to use some sort of interlocking brick, but a friend mentioned that he thinks wood would be better.

My hubby is leaning towards wood for the 3rd level -- it'll be cheaper (always a selling point for him!!), and won't require the gravel filler that we'd need for an interlocking brick patio. I should mention that we plan to build an interlocking brick patio at ground level as well, which will have the 8"-12" step up to the 3rd level of the deck.

Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions?? Or have I confused everyone?!

I haven't check to see if Home Depot can draw up deck plans -- that might be worth checking out. Thanks for mentioning it :)

We had a landscaper come up with a design for the backyard. She came up with the three deck levels, but not how to build them.

It'll probably be years before we get the whole backyard project finished!!
