 Hi everyone what I was wondering is what does everyone have for a patio.I am thinking about pavers, bricks etc.
I have a big empty( and I mean empty :biglol: ) backyard that is going to need at least something this year!!
$$ is an issue right now as well. I want something we could do ourselves.
I KNOW some of you Handydandies out there did your own patio!! :D
So how about sharing some pictures and instructions!!!!

Homegirl, I love your patio, what a great design!

Bigmama, we had been thinking about laying a patio in our yard last summer. I did find some instructions online, can't for the life of me remember what they were now...sorry...but from what I recall it was not to complicated to to do it yourself...labour intensive..yes..but doable. Better yet, Home Depot has some good books on such projects that are probably alot more detailed than what is available online. We ended up putting the proj. off because we could not fit it into our bugdet. When we do get around to it I will use stone because it has a more natural look and if it moves over the years it won't be as obvious as cement or bricks that have moved or possibly cracked. I suppose if it is done professionally and properly you might avoid that problem but as a do-it-yourselfer (in my situation anyways) I'd rather assume that I may run into problems with it moving...eventually:D

Is your backyard flat or does it have a slope? This is our patio in our backyard. Now keep in mind that we had landscapers do this, but the concept is wonderful, especially for us as our house sits quite high and our fence is low so privacy was an issue. The stone patio is actually sunken into the ground. The lawn comes to the top of the rocks and the patio sits about 2 feet down, providing a sunken living room feel and additional seating.

A retaining wall around the patio would be labour intensive but still could be done yourselves - I think. Mind you, I don't know alot about landscaping so I could be out to lunch!! I just thought if you had grade changes in your yard, a version of this would be an idea.

I've attached a picture of our patio.

My DH did it many years ago. I remember him putting screening or whatever they call it, and then place the slabs and you finish by putting sand in between the slabs where you have the spaces and you keep sweeping it until all the spaces are filled. He does have to move them every so many years because they tend to shift and sink as well, so that's something you might want to consider if you're doing the same thing. As for me, I prefer to have either poured concrete or patterned cement.

well get to your neighbours and scan...just joking :biglol:
Did you use a color slab and did you use sand pebble rocks or what??
I think I would like to do a good size area as well,I have the space to anyways.

Ours is done with slabs. We have quite a large area and then we have one of those canopies which DH dismantles and stores away for the winter.
