I bought and planted some new peonies today. They are not the tree! When I was planting one of them the stem broke off right where it joins to the root ball. It is still attatched but barely. I planted it anyways in hopes that it will still be okay but I'm doubtful. If it looses this stem will it send up another one? Or should i just pull it out? If it's not going to grow I would rather just pull it out now. Help?

Well, all of the peonies are still very happy! I'm pleasantly surprised... knock on wood!
Thanks everybody:) I will just wait it out and watch it next year. So far it doesn't look unhappy but it's only been a day.
Like dustbunnydiva said, peonies take patience. I think I got the 4 I have in about 2003, one I purchased and the rest divisions of peonies original to the home dh grew up in. My FIL told me peonies DO NOT take well to being transplanted, so I chose my planting sites carefully, knowing I would not be moving them again unless I had to. (in which case I'd be starting that whole patience-thing all over again!)
I've had blooms from them over the last 6 years, but this year is finally the time when they are bringing me the satisfaction I wanted from them. Up until now, they were kind of leggy and floppy, with few/no flowers to each plant. When FIL came over he even asked me why I put supports/stakes on mine, as he never has with his. I had to though as a bit of rain brings mine down. In my neighbourhood there are lots of peonies, none with 'crutches' like mine and all a lot fuller and sturdier looking. I am assuming they are more established than mine.
I don't think the plant will die, even if it has only one stalk and doesn't send up another. It will get better and better each year, though!:)
I would leave it but not expect anything great from it this year. Even a healthy peony takes awhile to adapt to its new location. You may have lost it but in my opinion I would give it a go. They are so beautiful and so worth the care. I moved my peony 2 years ago and just this year I see a stronger and healthy plant. Last year it refused to flower.
Peonies are fussy and hardy little creatures so you may want to leave it alone and see what happens. They hate being transplanted to start with but as long as you have the corm or whatever that root part is called exactly the same depth it was in it's pot it will probably send up a new shoot.
When it comes to new gardens it does really pay to be patient. Especially with perennials you may not see a lot of action the first year as they spend their time concentrating on their root systems. you also never know. When I transplanted a bunch of things from one yard to a new one it was the wrong time of year as well as some other issues and although I wrote some of the stuff off as 'nice try' the first year, I was told to leave them and sure enough, the second year they surfaced. One was even a month later than it should have been and I was sure it was just a dead thing but I gave it more time and it came back too.
