Hi: I am still on the hunt for plants with blue blossoms. pale or dark. Also annuals for next ear. Is there a blue salvia or am I dreaming ? The globe thistle I will move for sure lovely colour blooms.
The plants can be up to 12" in height for location I have planned.

Planning now as some gardens will be dug up in fall and plants moved. Molly or anyone ?

I would strongly recommend irises for those who adore blue blossoms. They come in so many vivid shades of blue, from pale to almost navy and lots in between. Some are 2-tone with white etc, and the blue of them really pops with the contrast.

I see that the hardiness zones refernce I gave you IS the latest one - for 2000. The old one dates back to 1967.

for the plant hardiness ratings -- I think there is even a later one and it is gettign warmer (have a look for Natural Resources Canada Website with plant hardiness)

Toronto is zone 6b-5a, so you MIGHT get away with it. Depends so much on the microclimate you have where you are. But you WILL likley have to baby them along in the winter. Talk to your local horticulturist. Good luck! I love agapanthus and try, every so often, to grow them as summer bulbs, but I can't even do that successfully :-((

MaryAnne,
my "perennial gardening guide" (valleau) - classifies the hybrids as zone 8 and the regular agapanthus as "may be hardy in zones 6-7 with sufficient winter protection". would you say toronto is zone 5 or 6? different zone maps have shown different hardiness for toronto (5, 5a, 6 6a, etc)- what does the letter indicate??? i guess the best thing to do is ask a gardening specialist if they'd work.... :)

oh :(
you are probably right. i did not see any hardiness rating...will have to check my book on that type. i go so excited about it too!! there is plenty to choose from though that's for sure. thanks for clarifying :)

according to my A to Z, most agapanthus is not hardy below zone 7 -- most of it is zone 8 or zone 9-10. BUT there is something called the Headborne Hybrids, that apparently are hardy to zone 6 and you will want to look for thyese. Unless of course, you live in balmy BC ;-)) I find it odd the www.perennials.com site does not seem to give hardiness ratings!!

is another blue flowering plant. there are a few different varieties (go to www.perennials.com to view them). i too am going to try planting them. it sounds as though they are quite easy to grow and work in sun or shade.......good luck :)

I have a spiderwort and a geranium that are both purple/blue. The spiderwort is a bit taller than 12", but you could maybe trim it back to keep it shorter. And the geranium seems to spread out rather than grow tall. But maybe that's because I need to cut it back.

I love blue flowers!!!! I have lots of them.... not too many under 12", though. I do have a beautiful blue delphinium that doesn't grow very tall (pics in my album). It's a different type than those tall, spikey ones that you normally see. Blue clips are nice and grow very low. The flowers bloom for a long time, and look very similar to balloon flowers. I think you can see them in some pics in my album. Ummm..... I have a grass that grows blue/purple flowers at the ends of the blades. I think it's called Blue Eyed Grass, or something like that. I think Dreamer has a plant in her garden called corydalis that has blue blooms. khyro and I bought the same plant this summer, and so far mine is really short -- not sure how tall it'll get next year. You can buy blue ice pansies, plant them in the fall, and then they'll bloom all next summer. I have a blue iris that isn't very tall -- taller than 12", but not huge (pics in my album). My absolute favourite perrenial blue flower is the hydrangea, but that's way over 12".

khyro also has a lot of blue flowers in her garden -- maybe she'll have more suggestions for you.

I had good results with Ageratum houstonianum.

A friend a mine tried Nemophila menziesii. They were really pretty in her blue and white border.
