the trick to making exellent rice is to wash it before you cook it!it is VERY DIRTY ! rinse in water and it will become cloudy remove water and rinse again and again till water is clear . drain well and than measure 2 parts water to 1 part rice . add butter, oil or water ever seasoning you like . bring to a rapid boil for a few minutes and than turn off but leave covered on stove till all water is absorbed , fluff with fork . this washing will only take a couple of minutes but has a huge impact . who wants to eat dirt ?

-- wash first. I also put my rice in first, with a little butter, leave it for 2-3 min., then add the water.

DH insists this is wrong, but I think it makes a difference (for the good). And I always use basmati, unless I need a different rice for a special recipe.

the type of rice you use affects the stickiness of the rice. in general, short grain rice is stickier (eg. sushi/japanese rice) versus long grain rice (eg. chinese, rice used in pilafs, etc.). i've never used instant rice, so not sure if you have to rinse or not, but definitely with regular rice.

do you do that with instant rice?...or is that for regular rice...cuz i always remember my mom washing her rice...but her rice is always sticky....
