Phone Scams

I have no idea what this was about but we have 2 separate phone numbers in the house and both phones were ringing at the same time. We answered both and both were a recorded message that said, "Congratulations you have just won a All expense paid trip" at that point we both hung up. I don't know if it was one of those one that you were to call back to and then they bill you hundreds of dollars on the phone bill or what it was but I can see how some people would get sucked in thinking they really won.

there ae worse scams thatn that - these people direct their efforts at various types of people, and are ver successful in it - I often wonder what would happen if we force-trained them all to be raving environmentalists or cancer researchers - with all that energy and ingenuity, a lot could happen !

My DH's aunt can never resist a bargain, and is forever mailing off those pieces of paper you get for those "collectibel" dolls or plates or pewter mugs or angels for the Christmas tree, or the thimbles with all the birthstones or the . . . . well, I am sure you get the picture by now, and she has tooms full of this ****, I am sure, by now!! Fortunately, she is not too badly off financially and has never gone without food over that stuff, but I am sure there must be some out there . .

The ones that used to upset my MIL were the ones addressed to my FIL after he had passed. She would write them a letter and explain andbe so upset that they would still sent mail to her of course not understanding that first they don't care and second it is all computer sent.

I hate those things. Like junk mail, I consider these junk phonecalls, as they are not quite the same as annoying telemarketing calls. I've never stayed on the line long enough with those "YOU HAVE WON" calls to see where they are going with it. i just hang up like you did.

Sadly there are people who get sucked into the scam calls. My elderly mother had a few incidences like that, but the junk mail scams were the worst for her in the last years she lived independently before her move to a Senior Residence. How that ended up was she would receive a note in the mail that there was a package for her to pick up at the post office. She'd hop on the bus all excited to see what she'd been sent, and after paying up to $30 for whatever the charges were, she would open a small package with junky stuff you could pick up at the dollar store but wouldn't because it was too junky: cheap jewelry and knick-knacks mainly. She was on a fixed income, and we figure she lost hundreds to this over several years based on what my sister could figure from her bank records and mail. I don't have a single nice thing to say about the rotten people who take part in operating those scams.
