PIC-embroidered laundry hamper project

Dawn's picture

I need a nicer-looking way to store my laundry until I get a full load or whites, darks, and 'other'. Because these laundry hampers were inexpensive at Superstore AND they have a distinct weave to the fabric, I decided to get started on making 3 with the names I mentioned.

It does take a long time to do this by hand. A much simpler method would be to purchase iron-on letters from the fabric store.

I haven't cross stitched in sooo long, that would just kill my fingers.
I really like your project. I tried sorting our laundry with different coloured hampers to match the loads, no so time consuming. But the personal touch is much nicer!
Good luck with the others:)

both your projects look great! I have not done any cross stitch in a long time...you inspire me to get back at it!

It wasn't tricky at all and I didn't use a hoop or anything. The material is like potato sacks (jutte in german, don't know what you would call it) so it was not hard to work with.

That's a great piece, Lisi! It is perfect for your little garden house.

I've never worked on a project that large-it must have been tricky to handle. Do you use a hoop or one of those floor stands? I've heard of q-snap frames, but I have never tried them, or the others I mentioned. I'm a scroller and a scruncher: I scroll-up my work and try not to scrunch up the fabric, but I always scrunch!

Hi Dawn,

here is the pic, it's not the best to see, the stichery is quite long so I had a hard time to show it all. Anyhow, it shows a procession with people in their national costumes taking their cows, goats and dogs into the mountains in the spring, still happens like that every year, sometimes the cows wear huge flower displays attachted to their horns.
We made a little loft area in the garden house, mostly to store summer stuff and I like to somehow put my cross stiching piece there but the way it is now, it's not covering up enough. Maybe it would be actually easier if DH puts some more wood panels there instead of me trying to make it fit.

I don't have one of those, but I have seen something like that called the Neck Magnifier by Ramco. It's a lightweight plastic lense that magnifies 2 1/2 times. I was going to either check Michaels, or order one from an online needlework place I use, but in the end I just picked up some 1.5 'reading glasses' at London Drugs. (it was closer, I was in a hurry to start)

I think I should get that neck one, though, so I don't go all buggy when I look up with those glasses! I'm wearing them on the end of my nose, and it's driving me crazy! Oh well, I'm sure I'll find use for them. My eyes are just barely ready for a prescription but it's only a matter of time before my arms get too short! I notice this a lot when I update the calendar on my fridge-I am always standing too close to read what I'm writing with my hand.

Your Swiss folklore picture sounds wonderful-post a picture if you can, finished or not. I have so many unfinished needlework projects to do it's incredible. I honestly don't think I have enough walls for them all anyway, but no matter. I do it for the joy of it, and if it makes the wall-so be it. If not, I tuck my finished bits away safely for consideration another day.

Dawn. When you're cross stiching, do you use the magnifying glasses, you put around your neck, looks likes a mirror (had one like that) or is there something else you can use. I need to add 2 more panels to a picture I did years ago, it's a swiss folklore theme with cows and we'll like to put it in our garden house but it's not wide enough where we want it. I hope with stronger glasses , I'll still be able to tackle this project.

I'm quite happy with the project so far. I'm really looking forward to keeping the laundry in waiting (sounds so much better than dirty laundry!) looking so much neater too.

Nice to see you're doing some cross-stiching, it's going to look great!
Sorry to hear you had a bad week, I hope the week-end is shaping up better for you.

for doing it by hand. I have had a bad week which really slowed me down, and my first one is taking forever. I'm wishing I just bought the iron-on embroidered letters.

Oh well, too late now. Funny though as I've had a lot of time to think as I painstakingly complete stitch after stitch with my magnifying glasses, I'm beginning to wonder if these things will lool a lot like drums of toxic waste lined up in the laundry room.
