pic - finished pergola

Hi!
Well, my husband finished the pergola and deck he was building. We are SO happy with how it turned out so I thought I'd attach a picture of the final project. He built it all from scratch. We drew the design for the top pieces on paper and then traced the template onto the wood - he then used a jigsaw to cut out each piece! He used 6x6 posts for the main structure and from then on it was all done by inspiration as he went along. The design on the back and the two sides were all from imagination. We added a screen behind the back (we used 3 layers of screen to get the privacy effect we wanted) to the back to add some extra privacy, although it doesn't completely block out the view of the woods which is what we wanted. It took him exactly one month to build it - completely on his own (ok, I helped at times ;)) and this is the first time he's built something like this - no experience/background at all - just lots of imagination, determination and hard hard work (especially digging out eight 3-foot holes for the 6x6 posts!) We put the furniture in this weekend and the last thing to do now is make curtains for the 4 remaining side panels (for extra privacy when we need it) - they will be pushed to one side when not in use and a canopy for the top (which will be installed on a wire cable system on the underside of the roof) - the canopy can be left opened and shut for more shade. The entire strucutre measures 16x14'. This is now our focal point in our backyard and will build/design the rest of the garden around this. We will start the planting around the Pergola next Spring...:)

Hi Zulu,

You're right, when you make it yourself you appreciate the hard work and the entire process so much more when it's all done!

You must be in 7th heaven. What a great job you and hubby did. I think when you do something like this yourself, you always enjoy it more...

Your husband did an outstanding job, congrats to the both of you. You are right it is a wonderful focus point now and you can take it from there. I'm lucky to have an extremely handy hubby too, he designed and built our little garden house with the same idea, it became the focal point of the garden. We are just moving stuff in there now, he put laminate floor in, saved from the old place. Installed old kitchen cabinets for storage and later in the fall he wants to make a stain glass window for the front. Anyhow your pergola is stunning and I can't wait to see how you will finish it off with the fabric.
