Barberries do like sun. the ones at my old house would change colour through the season starting green, then deep burgundy, and in the fall gold.

BTW, I bought myself one a few days ago. Rona had (has) all of their plants and some of their trees on sale for half price or better.

Indigo, you're right -- in a few years, I'll probably be complaining about how all the plants in the garden are squashed together!! I had to remove a bunch of perennials from another garden this year, because they were so cramped and growing into each other. I'm not very good at planning ahead -- I see a plant that I like and I buy it and then have to figure out where to put it!!

It's funny how I never noticed smoke trees and barberrys in other people's garden's before -- but now that I have them, I'm seeing a lot of them around!! Or at least I'm recognizing what they are now :)

bigmama & Indigo, I think barberrys like a lot of sunlight. The sun will keep their foliage that nice pinkey/orangey/salmon colour. So make sure you plant yours in sunny spots :)

New plantings always look sparse Smoodg, it takes a few years for a garden to start looking full and lush, be patient, I'm sure your garden will flourish and bring you new delights every year:)
I love the barberry! I bought two for my front/side yard this year. I saw mature ones on someones property the other day and it made me want more for in front of my house. They look amazing in their natural form but also make for attractive hedges.

Oh, sorry luvto, I found those pics on the Net, those aren't my plants.... but hopefully, mine will look as good as those ones do eventually!!

I finished planting everything last night, except for one periwinkle. I had reached my limit as to how many bug bites on my butt I could deal with, and I had to escape from their blood-thirsty buzzing!! I'll plant it today and post some pics of my not-quite-as-impressive garden :o

I'm hoping that if I prune the barberry (and other plants) back, they'll stay a manageable size. I've cut down the number of plants in that bed I'm working on to 6 -- 3 Silverleaf Dogwoods, 1 Barberry, 1 Hakuro Nichiki Variegated Willow, and a zebra grass. I moved the smoke bush tree, Japanese maple, and little spruce tree into the garden beside the driveway, and the ornamental grass is now in the bed under the dining room window.

I was pretty brutal with my gardens yesterday -- I pulled out about 10 plants to thin things out and make room for new plants. I love my creeping phlox, but once the flowers are done, they're just big masses of flat greeness that take up room in the garden and don't look very interesting. So those are gone, as well as two hydrangeas that refuse to bloom (replaced with one that's supposed to bloom all summer long), a columbine, blue clips, spiderwort.... hopefully, I'll be able to find new homes for most of them. They're nice plants, but I want to change things up.

That looks just like the ones I used to have at my last house. I love those bushes and that house had them for years. They were an older variety planted a couple of decades ago and then were banned here until a couple of years ago and now I understand there are new varieties, but just in case yours in like mine, I can tell you they grow very big. Mine were well over 6' tall and about the same across, were south facing and got a lot of sun.

they look great all year with the way they change and give colour. I'm going to try and get beds ready here so I can plant some for this house.

You're welcome :) I'll make sure mine is planted in full sun -- I love that pinky/reddish/orangey/purplish colour that the leaves are when they're exposed to sunlight :)

Yep...thats the one I have. Although..because I had originally planted it in the shade..it barely grew and turned green. Now that I've moved it out where it recieves pretty much full sun...it has started to grow and the foliage is turning reddish-orangish-purple. I just moved it about 10 days ago...amazing.
Thanks Smoodg
