I am moving into a new house in two months. And I have not yet really set a style for the place. But I for sure like simplicity... One thing that bugs me a lot about the place is the kitchen cabinate doors!
This is one of those cheap-rent homes... so all the doors (from Cabinates to bedroom doors) are all these white boring no molding no nothing doors. And I want to jazz it up. My idea is maybe to use gold-leaf and make a small nice little border around each cabinate doors.... but I'm kindda afraid it would look tacky and stupid... will it?? My other idea is to paint a simple plane black stripe down the cabinate.... But I honestly just can't decide what to do?! I hate them SO much!!! Please help... :(
Also about the room doors... :(

You must have thought I was drinking or a really bad speller...my keyboard is sticking lately. Apologies. Would love to see a pic of the results. I think Mambo girl has a great idea with the dark cabinets. We painted our bathroom cabinets a satin oil-base black and they look so rich and awesome. It had a black counter and the hardware I stripped and it looks like a dark pewter. Alot of work mind you, but it looks awesome. And by the way the bathroom looks bigger! I chose some pops of burnt orange in towels and tall grass with orange edges in to glass vases either side of the sink. My shower curtain is neutral- clear with silver stripes. When I want to change the colour, badabing a new towel and floral arrangement. And I'm done. Oh, the walls are called wicker. Also a satin oil base.
I've already decided to paint 2 of the 4 living room walls a nice natural green, so painting green in the kitchen would be awesome... maybe with an orange/yellow accent or something.
I absolutely LOVE the placemats... I think I'm going to buy them :)
Thanx all..
I'll keep u updated on it
Take a look at these placemats from Crate&Barrel.. They have orange and that green in them.. they would tie in nicely with the appliances.. just showing you that there are lots of choices out there.. you just have to have a vision in your mind and it will all come together!
I think you should work with what you have.. I would not try to change too much since you are just renting.
I agree, the cabinets you love (I love them too, one of my favs) have a very retro feel.. the appliances are retro also.
Why not do a fresh avocado/lime green on the walls? Something lighter than the appliances but in the same colour "family" that way the appliances will look like you "wanted them that way".
You can also paint your cabinets in a nice dark brown (almost black, so that it does not look like "chocolate" against avocado). Add some brushed stainless knobs (like the LANSA).
For your counters, get some nice stainless accessories and maybe some dark wooden bowls (as previously suggested, would look great).
For your window treatments, you could get something that incorporates orange, like a geometric pattern, something very retro. And then bring out orange in accessories also, or some nice fresh oranges in the dark wooden bowls.
The combination of brown, avocado, orange will really be retro, but when done right will also be contemporary and very current..
Let me know if you have any other questions!
Great advice!
Time to reconsider again
Not the way to go-o!
If you are renting don't go over board in getting exactly what you want. I've found makind do and finding other ways to get the feel is far more palatable. For instance, the advice of moulding around the edge and painting, even a little wash of antiquing can look fab. And the advice of new handles or knobs can be taken with you. A great investment and described and jewellery. The backsplash you said was to be glass/green? Are you painting the back of glass before applying it to the wall? I've also seen it done with gold/silver leafing on the back of the glass and it looked fantastic. Glass however is a pain to keep clean. And as for the green appliance...it's retro! Go with the flow if you want it to go away. The cabinets you chose have a 70's feel. So paint the wood with a great green! Silver handles or knobs and buy a few trendy pieces. If you like the wood, go for wooden bowls and a few pops of colour like orange glasses. It's fun, young and fresh. And you won't set yourself up for disappointment.
I think this is what me n my bf want.... but since right now we have STUPID White laminate on our cabinets... we need at least wood-look-alike laminate...
*ponders* Im so having a meeting with our landlord!!!
Now this is SEXY!!!
mmmm... I want it so bad!!!!!!
Like you said, White contemporary doors might be a good choice... But then again... We have a very ugly puke green fridge/oven. And that would just throw off the whole design.
{Maybe I'll just make the whole kitchen Grungy CHIC! LOL}
I am putting a green frosted glass back splash as well. If there is a choice to add cheap molding to the cabinet doors, I might just do that... I am sure the landlord wouldn't really mind, cuz if anything, it makes the place look nicer and would add value to the place.
Right now, the handles we have is this plain white knobs. I looked at the lansa handles I like them a lot... and it would look good with Platsa knobs!!
THis whole designing is all I have on my mind right now... stressing me out. BUT I AM LOVING IT!!!!!
How about adding some moulding to them? You can get cheap picture moulding at Home Depot or any building supply store, they are very light so you could probably even attach them with some No More Nails or similar type of glue. That will add some dimension to the doors. That is if you're even allowed to do something like that.. I know when I was in my apartment I couldn't even paint the walls :( (That's why I moved out!) haha
I, too, like simplicity.. My style is very contemporary.. I actually like plain simple doors.. I think all they need is some very interesting hardware. What kind of knobs do you have on there now?
If you are allowed to drill holes in the cabinet (I'd be surprised, though!) take a look at the LANSA handles from Ikea.
