Planting behind a tree

The garden centre who installed our tree last year insisted that it be place in the corner with all this space behind it. Since it has survived being transferred from Northern Quebec (half frozen) to my backyard last year... its now time to think of "Landscape". I am thinking of putting 2-3 Sungold threadleaf false cypress or some Juniper horizontalis at the base and wondered about some ornamental grasses for behind it as it looks "off". Also, wondered about what other plantings would be suitable? Suggestions welcome! Oh, and they should be "dog" friendly as she might eat them!

If the area does not get a lot of sun ( not a hot area)why not try some ferns or astillbes back there. Both are tall perennials and then a shade loving plant like impatiens or begonias in front. I can also see some nice rocks in that corner for interest too. Make sure you add some compost to the soil and you could even bring the height up some as well.
