Hi everybody, wondering if you can help me. I have 2 black urns in front of my house on either side of the garage. Usually every year I go the easy route & buy a mixed hanging basket & pluck it in...well this year I thought I'd try for some height (the front of my house is straight up 2 storeys) & I bought a couple of black obelisks (sp??) for them & thought I'd try an annual vine & some flowers around it. Anything you guys can suggest that's fast growing & hardy? It will get late morning/afternoon sun. My house is red brick with brown garage so I would like to stay away from reds. In my garden I have white astilbe's, grasses (green) varigated hostas, veronicas (purple flower) and a lilac. That's pretty much it for colour, otherwise everything is greenery. I'll post a picture tomorrow because I need suggestions for my garden bed as well!
thanks so much!!

My friend who does my gardens suggested the mandevilla & when I went to Terra this weekend they only had red...although I thought it would look good with purple I didn't really want it for my red brick house. I went with the morning glory, ivy & some petunias, I can't wait for them to grow a bit; that's why I usually buy the premade baskets & pluck those in!
I would plant a Mandevilla in each urn, I have seen them in pink, white and red and they are easy to grow and have beautiful flowers. Plant low growing annuals around the base of the plant and these should look stunning in the front of your house.
I found this pic on the web for you.
:) Yes the purple flower is a morning glory and they grow very fast ...they come in many colours and have large leaves....I use to have them climbing my fence but they get very full and are a chore to pull down in the fall...but they are very lovely ...in the fall they go to seed and will reseed or you can take the seeds from them and plant them the next year...
The weather has been lousy here also...of course I work this week-end and the weather forecast looks beautiful....my yardwork has been at a standstill ...every day counts as the summer is so short but I guess things will get done :)I haven't bought one flower yet...maybe tomorrow :)
I was thinking ivy as well but wasn't sure if I should get a flowering vine. The morning glory is a climber isn't it? Is that the purple flower in the 1st pic? I have been DYING to go to the nursery & buy some flowers, what is with this weather??!! It's supposed to be nice this weekend, finally!

I have planted english ivy in my obelisk and they grew rapidly...they are very hardy and have a nice shiny leaf....I have posted a few pics of some.... one with morning glories combined with it if you want some colour :) I haven't purchased my plants yet...too cold...but I think I will get some english ivys again this year for my obelisk. :) They come in verigated shades also.
