plastic planter

I have a large plastic planter that holds one of my indoor plants. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but the plastic 'faux terra cotta' look, just looks cheap.

Does anyone have any ideas for dressing up, or decorating the planter? The plant inside is quite large, so switching planters at this point isn't an task I really don't want to undertake.

Like obella, I'm thinking you might just set the pot inside another container. How about something in some kind of wicker or woven material? If no store comes to mind try Ikea, London Drugs, Home Sense, Pier1, Linen N Things, etc. (don't overlook items sold as laundry hampers, as you may find one there) If you are a bit handy, you could make a box from MDF or wood. Instead of a full box you could even hinge 4 sides only together and clasp at the back, for a faux pot, if the pot is very heavy. Just paint as you desire. Depending on your decor, you may even like the look of the plant containers that I think are zinc, which garden centres and Loblaws/Superstore carry in Spring/Summer. Lastly, the Bay has several storage containers including H&H items. I forget the name of another line that was displayed with those, but I think it was a Bay brand. In that line I saw a large square box in a leather look, which is another option.

The Acrylic paint sounds like a good idea, but how is it with plastic? Would it eventually chip off? Or if I do have to prime it first, is there a special primer that has to be used on plastic?

I don't know how much detail is on your fake terracotta, but I have recently seen pots painted with that chalkboard paint (maybe @ Pottery Barn?). They were straight sided though, and I don't know if that paint sticks to plastic, you might have to prime first.

I'd either paint it black..just with some craft acryrlic paint,

or better yet, look for a pot you love, and set the plant, plastic planter and all right inside of it.
