Hi everyone.

In responding to a previous post about the "Feature homes" and the purchase power of the owners of those homes, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to see where we all fit as "posting viewers" in terms of salary, so as to let H&H know where the average viewing homeowner fits. I know this is a personal question, so please don't feel obligated to answer - I just thought it would be interesting to see where we (as viewers) fit as average.

Income 100,000+. While I have visited some of the high-end shops mentioned on shows and in the magazine, mostly I use them for inspiration. Very often I find that I can source similar products at 'cheaper' stores like Caban or HomeSense. But its the way things are displayed, or grouped together in the high-end stores that I find useful...I always get new ideas on how to achieve a certain 'look' in my own home.

Another tip: I am a design seminar fan and find this is another great source of information and inspiration. Barbara Barry, Brian Gluckstein, Cecconi & Simone, Designer Guys...I've heard them all speak and asked them questions on how to solve my own personal design dilemmas.

Hi Dekota_Skye and others. Thanks for your response to my posting. My husband and I own and operate a small business, therefore our income is only in the 40,000-50,000 range. We also live in a small town quite far from a major city, so access to the discount home accessory stores is somewhat limited. I do shop online, but shipping charges are high on large items. I do agree that part of the challenge of decorating is interpreting the looks that we see in the magazine and on the show within our budget. However, many of the looks that we see include furniture and fittings that are extremely expensive. For example, Sub Zero fridges, gourmet ranges, marble or granite counter tops, designer furniture (Barbara Barry),...etc. Much of the look of these rooms revolves around the beauty of these pieces which are nearly impossible to copy at a lower price to fit our budgets. Also, many of the homes that we see featured are huge. The other day there was a home featured near Calgary that was over 10,000 sq.ft. with a lap pool inside. How many of us can even relate to something like that, let alone try and take inspiration from it? I look forward to hearing more of your comments.

100 000, before taxes. I agree with smarty pants; very often I love the look, but don't want to spend the money... because I like to change looks alot. I use the ideas, and shop around to get the look I'm tring to achieve.

Good morning ~

$90,000-$100,000 (before taxes).

Thank you, Dekota_Skye, for taking on this poll. I'm sure you'll get an overwhelming response.

In response to a comment made by one of our H & H forum sisters, I wholeheartedly agree that it's not feasible for most of us to shop exclusively at the high-end specialty stores often referred to in the show. However, sometimes, by incorporating the design 'look' (for example, by shopping for similar looking pieces at stores like Ikea, Home Outfitters, Linens 'n Things, etc.) we can achieve the style we all desire.

;)
