We moved in to a new house last August, and I'm looking for a solution to safety-proof my backyard. We have two young children under 3 years old, and originally we had two ponds in our backyard. Last fall, after we moved in we filled one in, but we would like to keep the one that is in the back corner of our lot, as I really enjoy the sound of a water feature.
I'm thinking a pondless waterfall might be the way to go, and probably look better than just fencing in the exsisting pond. Has anyone built a pondless water feature? I'm wondering what to use under the stones that will fill the pond in... Some kind of grate I assume? Any experience with this??
Thanks.

Fencing around the pond will be a good idea, as you have small children, when they grow up you can remove the fence. It will also cost you less. Putting grate in the pond might give rise to muddy surface. I dont think it is safe for small children.
Could you just put a heavy duty grate over the pond and cover it with rocks? That way you just need to install a pump for a fountain or you could build the water fall beside. As long as the grate was covered with rock heavy enough so the kids couldn't move it you would have the option to redo it as a pond later.
