Pot Light Retrofit

Kris10's picture

I am looking for some suggestions on lighting. I have two old pot lights in my main floor powder room, one centred over the sink and the other over the toilet. There is no other light in the room. I would like to put more pot lights in the bathroom, but don't want to put the 'old style' large diameter lights, and also don't want to have to redo the entire ceiling.

Has anyone ever heard of light can retrofits that could turn my old style lights into the new smaller style? If they do exist, any idea where I can get them?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone - I think I will look into the retrofit kits and then go from there.

Hi Kris10 Welcome, Try Home Depot for the retrofit kits, I've seen them at the Home Depot store.

I have never heard of retrofit cans. Even if they do exist, I'm not sure they would look right.

The hole left by the old light can be patched easily. You will need to tape/plaster, and paint out the ceiling. It's not as much work as you may think.

Also by patching the old holes, you're not held captive to the placement of your current lights.

Our old lights are being replaced with the newer smaller 50 watt types that you find on sale at just about any store. We opted for the stainless steel look but it does require a smaller hole and so if you go to replace the older ones, you will have to confront the size of the hole issue.

We put in a wood celing in the bathroom and drywall in the kitchen and these are being instralled today, as I write actually, as the contractor is busy at work.

They are not as bright as the originals but very easy to install. We got ours at Rona - JIB is the brand IIRC. Screw in bulb too for easy replacement.
