Pottery Barn Alternative

So we've gone to a couple of furniture stores so far - Sears Home, The Furniture Mall (which has several vendors), The Brick. And the most frustrating thing so far is that we find we don't like 90% of the merchandise. Even if it's nice, it's not our style. And what we are looking for is fairly basic - espresso woods for our coffee table and master bed (more chocolate brown rather than the reddish brown mahogany wood), a mix of rustic and modern decor, cream or taupe sofa with the dark espresso feet, etc. We love the look of neutrals with espresso furniture which goes well with our neutral walls and our golden oak hardwood. Eventually when we get our basics, we'll get some Asian or ethnic colourful accessories to punch it up. It's a fairly straightforward style considering that we see it in a lot of home decor magazines.

The one store that has furniture that we do like is Pottery Barn. I'd say that we would probably find one or two pieces that we didn't like, but everything else we absolutely adore. Unfortunately, everything at PB seems to be marked-up and as first-time homeowners, we simply cannot afford their stuff.

Can anyone please tell me if there are stores with merchandise very similar to Pottery Barn? The quality can be equal or slightly less than equal.

Thanks!!!

Alfred Sung? hopefully it'll be budget priced. I was floored when I was in Zellers a few weeks ago and saw a $90 shower curtain, from the house and home collection. Zellers certainly isn't the place I'd think of when I think of expensive stuff, so maybe that's changing. That or H&H thinks they can sell that price range at zellers based on their name alone..??

You could check out EQ3. They have some espresso stuff in there. If you go to the one on Queen West (Toronto) there are other really nice stores along that strip that sell awesome stuff! I can't remember the prices, though -sorry.

about PB. If you put a kitchen in the back I could just move right in. I love everything in there.

The only other place I could think of it the Loblaws Superstore stuff is sort of PB-like but definitely not the same quality. You would have to be buying things that won't get as heavy use. Also the Bay has a lot of interesting things now that Brian Glucksein and H and H are designing for them. end tables or night tables, dark wood, not sure if they were the right colour for you, though, with an Asian influence at, of all places, WalMart the last time I ws there ! If you have no luck anywhere else, you might want to give them a try . . .

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. We will check out all of the stores!! I've never heard of Urban Barn and would never dream that Costco would have similar stuff. Brandsmart was actually next on our shopping list.

Hey Redroze!

I too would suggest Urban Barn. Your style sounds very similar to my own and I find Urban Barn to be great. Believe it or not, I saw some espresso colour furniture pieces at Superstore! They were really inexpensive but I'm sure the quality is not as great as Pottery Barn or Urban Barn. Happy shopping!

Costco.ca may have everything you are looking for. Check out the deep cappuccino 3 pc table set, the expresso bedroom collection and the neo fabric living room collection. Good luck

Pottery barn is that they do happen to have a lot of sales. I have gone in and found things (mostly accessories though) marked down by 30-50%. I guess it is because they turn over their merchandise fairly frequently. They also mark down the floor items ,but sometimes they are quite damaged. You have to go in fairly regularly. I love that store, but you are right, it can be expensive. I want to buy everything, but then I think of that Friends episode. :D I will miss PB when I move. :(

I know exactly what you're talking about. Have you tried Urban Barn? They may carry some items similar to Pottery Barn, or at least a little more contemporary with some sort of rustic charm. Their website is either .ca or .com.

Also, the sofas you're looking for sound similar to what I have. I got them from a place in Scarborough but many vendors should carry them or can order them. They're Serta-Stylus and come in an array of microfibre colours and you can get chocolate brown legs. They have square arms-quite linear. I've seen them at many other stores too, just a bit more expensive. I don't know where you live but the store is called Brandsmart Furniture and they're in Scarborough. What about Decorium? http://www.decorium.com/index.php. They can be pricey but they have a huge showroom and put things on sale very often. Large variety of styles. Again, I don't know where you live but you can always browse their sites and try and find out the manufacturer and model numbers of the items you like and find out who their other retailers are.

Good luck
