propagating delphiniums

Have you increased your stock of delphiniums in the garden? As they are perennial, I guess I thought the bunches would just get larger by themselves, but now that I'm in the third year of blooms....guess not. I suppose they multiply by the seeds on the stocks I've been lopping off to encourage a second bloom later in the season.

Last year I DID make an effort to save seeds and scatter, but I made the mistake of using a plastic grocery bag to gather them and ended up with a mildewy mess, which I tossed. I guess the right way is to properly dry the clipped stalks and save for the seeds, then scatter. Am I on the right track? Got any tips to share?

TIA

As the seeds ripen and dry on the stalks just take a paper bag and shake them off in there. Add a piece of paper towel and keep them in a dry cool place til next year. I do that with seeds and so far it has been successful. Delphiniums are stubborn to start from seed but worth a try. Saok them over night in warm water first and then plant them. :p You can try planting some in the late fall as well as next spring...likea test to see which works best.
