I saw a pic of that grass and had to have it! So finally yesterday I was able to track it down and plant it. Thought, I share my excitement and send a pic. I have never planted this and hope it will turn out, It's called Pennisetum Setaceum

ohmigosh...can imagine that was a scary time for u both...so glad hes doing well...gardening can be great therapy plus its so nice to sit and relax and enjoy all your efforts...my poor DH doesnt get much time to relax PLUS its still way too cool to even have the garden furniture out yet...this weekend we will be trying to repair the mole damage...what a time consuming job that is...will get some "critter ridder" tomorrow and pray that it works..
Hope mine will do the same, I'm excited to see it. Happy gardening!
I'll post some pics under a new topic later, DH really did a very nice job, Thinking back, it just give me chills, only a couple weeks later after the shed was finished, he suffered a heart attack, followed by angioplasty but he doing much better now (soo lucky!)
Our grass looked like the photo, however, it never had that many flowers (?) or whatever you call those whispy things. It was very nice though and it was really easy to care for duing the summer.
the more info we get..the better..how is your garden coming?
oh yes please lisi...would love to see any pics that u have...my DH isnt the handy type so we may have to get Home Depot to build a shed for us..we are still deciding which kind and what size we want...in any case...love the flowers...gives me hope that I can get some colour in my back yard...its still just a year old so its a work in progress
found this web site. Maybe it will be of some use to all you gardeners

Does it really look like on the picure I posted, I just love that. I live in BC and so it might survive. I was reading about your Ivy too, unfortunatley can't help you. We have it outdoors and it can be a huge problem, actually the neigbour has it and it climbed right over the fence in our yard.
and I just tossed it at the end of the season because I don't have space indoors to move it to for the winter and I don't think that it would have survived. Our neighbours also had some grass in pots out during the winter and it's still brown. I think it gets too cold here for that kind of grass.
the crocosmia is a plant from the iris family and has underground corms. I leave them in the ground here, they are considered fairly winterhardy! Some of the guests left but their young university son has some field studies in our area and will stay for the time being!! I have more pics of the garden shed , showing DH building it- in case you are interested-.
throw em out..the guests I mean...:)...those are gorgeous!...never heard of them...are they a bulb or an annual? How do you treat them? Your whole garden is gorgeous...tried to find that pic u posted of the whole yard (with the shed) to show my hubby...couldnt find it so I appreciate the new pic...thanks and happy gardening (it's so cold here today there is a layer of ice on my pond).... pffffffft April indeed!
Never had canna lilies but may want to check it out. Sorry to hear that you lost them - darn mother in law -! We have so mild winters here, no comparison what you guys go through. There is a plant, I really like too, it's Crocosmia, it has beautiful orange flower, they look awesome in bouquets and it multiplies quickly, I had them in pots and beds. They are quite hardy and might survive in your climate. I have a pic, it's the tall, orange plant in the pot. Today I'm very cranky, got "houseguests" and no time to read the forum....
yeah its discouraging isnt it?...I know there are many grasses that are perennials tho...soon be time to hit the nurseries...we cant plant here until the 24th of May weekend so I have a garage full of plants...the one plant I DID lose over the winter was my canna lilies...was my first time planting them and I read we have to dig them up come fall but NOOOOOO my mother in law said she always left hers in...well Thats Burnaby maybe but found out its way too cold here...the bulbs were just mush last weekend when I dug them up...have u ever planted them? They are amazing!!!
I'll look for some zebra grass too. You know, I was thinking, the purble fountain grass probably wouldn't survive your winters (tender perannial) thats why they sell it as an annual in your area. Too bad, it might not even make it here, we sometimes go below zero!
small world...my hubby was born and raised there...his house is long gone and it sure doesnt look like he remembered it :(
btw...I do have one perennial grass called zebra grass...planted it around the pond last year and I see its back again...wasnt sure it would survive but it did...
The label said tender perennial, so I guess it should come back every year, I don't know to much about perennials.
I bought the plant at Mandeville Garden Centre, 4746 Marine Dr., Burnaby. It's the first time I'm planting this but I just loved the look. Was nice to hear from you again and congrats!
just did a google search on the latuin name - it can be quite a ferocious invasive plant! Maybe a pot would be better!
for that plant and finally found one in Vancouver, was so happy but OMG sooo expensive $9.00 for one plant (good thing DH is going to propagate this fall!) I would put them in the ground, I'm keeping it only in pots for this summer and see how it does but would like to see it ina a larger area.
I love it too!!. Will it come back year after year?
I love that grass! Where did you get it? Is it better in pots or can I plant right in the ground?
Actually it is written on as "Tender Perennial", so I guess it is a perennial. I have never planted grasses before or maybe a couple of year ago (have to dig in my files, if I find anything I'll let you know). Oh yeah, the animals take it easy today but they are allowed, (both seniors).
what a life they have
just love the grass...saw it last fall but its an annual isnt it?
I am looking for perennials in grasses...do you know of any?
I've never seen that grass before. I'll try to find some here, but doubt it very much that I'll be able to find it. I'll let you know when the gardening centres open. I like the natural look of it.
I put it in the two buckets on the wooden beams there is also lobelia in it. The pets had a relaxing morning today!!
