A Question About Hardware Finishes

We've just moved into a home that has brass hardware throughout. We have started replacing the door hardware with Venetian Bronze door knobs. The new hardware looks fabulous against the freshly painted Cloud White doors.

My husband and I have been debating about what happens when you get into the bathroom, kitchen and so on. Our debate is whether it's ok to mix finishes? My sense is that it's ok as long as they are somewhat in keeping with one another. Matte with matte. My husband thinks they all need to be the same - venetian bronze door knobs = venetian bronze faucets, etc... I am of the mind that this look may become flat.

Please find below an image of the door knobs. I have also included a knob that I would love to find in the proper size for our folding closet doors - no luck yet! There are two images of faucet finishes I'm thinking about. I'm thinking that this decision is going to set the standard for the rest of the house.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and any advice you can share!

Thank you.

Thank you everyone for all the great advice.

We will proceed with different finishes. I showed my husband spread after spread in home magazines that showcased different finishes throughout, and he's now on board! I agree, variance is definitely more interesting, providing there is a common thread flowing throughout the space.

Thank you all!

While the finish on your knobs and fixtures don't need to match (although I agree with CA'sMom that all door knobs/hinges must match one another), I personally believe that there needs to be a common design that is reflected in all your choices. For example, country-kitchen knobs on the kitchen cabinets with a modern fixture on the sink would NOT be good. Even room to room, differences in design can look disjointed (i.e., bathroom is modern, kitchen is tuscan-inspired). That doesn't mean that you can't mix an old look with a more contemporary look - it just means that there sould be commonality of design and flow from one room to the next. What you've choosen so far is a perfect example... the door knob reflects an older style and finish while the bathroom fawcet you've posted, even though it's in a similar finish, is quiet comtemporary in style. Yet the two look great together.

Doorknobs throughout the house should definitely match. (Although, there is some leeway to have something different on the second level or in the basement, but all the same is better). You should also switch the hinges on the doors to match the doorknobs. That's a common mistake - switching knobs to a dark or silver finish and leaving on the brass hinges. But kitchen and bath cabinet knobs, faucets etc. do not have to match the doorknobs. Bronze doorknobs with nickel door pulls and chrome or nickel faucets is a great look, in particular, I think. But if you like the dark metals it is also okay if they do match.

I've got Venetian Bronze doorknobs all through my house (the trim and door colour is a warm cream). Both my bathrooms have chrome fixtures. I don't think it really matters.
