Hey!
So my neighbours were recent victims of a home invasion type of robbery.. thankfully no one was hurt and the damages were minimal, but it gets me thinking of the safety of my own home. Our neighbourhood isn't bad by any means, and this incident came as a total shock to everyone, but I'm thinking of upgrading my security system. What are some good and reliable setups? Does anyone have any similar experiences or have had any close calls with intruders? (god forbid)

The thing is security systems don't up your protection, they only up the awareness factor. They are alarms, not locks in other words. So they let you know someone is coming in vs not allowing someone in.
If you want to prevent breakins (by rookies at least) you need to address any access there might be by making sure you have good locks (and door frames to hold them), windows which can't be used as entrances, and really good visibility in your yard (which is why 6' high solid fences are bad because the nicest thing you can do for burglars is give them cover to work).
Alarm systems are like a second line of defense but they are a bonus when something happens and you are not home (like a fire) or to make some noise.
It's also proven, dogs are one of the best deterrents to burglars because they make noise (most of them) before anyone can get close to your house.
