Rocks and small boulders

While digging and clearing up a corner of my garden, I have found many buried round rocks, like large ostrich eggs and bigger.
I know I have seen boulders and rocks going for crazy prices at the nursery, so throwing these away as rubble must be insane.

So what do I do with them? How do I place them in the garden so they look visually pleasing? I tried the scattered around the flowerbed method, and it doesn't look right.

If you decide you aren't going to be able to use the stones, you might keep an eye out for any neighbours who are using them and see if they would like to take yours away. It would help both of you.

At my last house everyone had a lot of those river rocks (ancient rivers are where the round ones come from) and sure enough there was always someone around who was using them so the rest of us would donate to their cause.

Thanks all, after looking at Kernsnursery, I think a rock garden will not work in the area I am planting. I am more of an 'old fashioned' type, according to the website.
So anyone for some rocks? Maybe I could sell them on ebay! :D

One site I found that has a few pictures with rocks used in the garden is www.kernsnursery.com. You may find some inspiration in the photos there.

I think it takes a lot of trial and error to get the look you really like. I haven't reached the point where I'm adding rocks, but I like the look of it. Years ago I put rocks along the edges of a kidney shaped border garden I had, but I did not like weeding around them on the grass side-it always grew through. I think I'll just be adding them inside the garden.

A friend of mine has a 2' high planter about 2' wide by 5' long in which her husband has made groupings of rocks in the two back corners, where the planter is against the house. He alternated stone colours within each group, and it looks nice.

I'd love to find great rocks right in my back yard. I've painted a few with patio paints, and I'd like to do a few more of them one day. Some people actually paint them to sell, but I do only a few for myself and friends. Here is a picture of all but one I have done.

What I have done in the past is dump some new soil mixed with compost in a hill the size of the garden you want. ( about 12-15" deep in the center tapered out to the edge.)
Then I place the rocks in there. I put the rocks on their side for some height in the centre and then lay them flat near the edge of the hill. Then plant rock garden plants that will creep over the rocks as they grow. Mine is in full sun so I bought sun loving perennials. I have also sedum that grows taller for some interest. It blooms in late summer but the foliage is pretty. Search the NET for rock garden plants and I am sure you will get photos and ideas there.

So if you had the rocks, how would you make this rock garden?

on my...please, come dump them in my yard!!! i keep meaning to go to the nursery and..yikes...BUYING rocks. I still cannot believe they charge maybe $20 and upwards for a stupid rock but i have not had luck 'stumbling' across rocks. our garden seems so bare and everything is in shade most of the time that i just want to create a rock garden with low lying plants. if anyone knows of a place i can find rocks for cheap let me know...

personally i HATE those rocks...living in front of a gravel pit...you can only imagine the amount of rocks that i find when i try to dig a new garden...if it's not rocks it's sand...and the really fine sand...the gravel pit sells it..as brick sand used in making concrete....but a lil further down i posted a thread called ''garden tips from PC insider website''...i'll bump it up for ya...but it has a lil thing about what you could do with rocks....but if you wash them with the hose to get all the dirt off them i'm sure you could find lots of uses for them around the garden....i on the other hand...load them in the wheelbarrel and DH goes and dumps them in the bush behind the house....ahhhhh....they drive me insane....
