Thanks, that's what I thought but I thought that I would ask anyways just to be sure.
To be honest I don't know how old it is because we got a case of it as a present from my MIL 4 months ago and she had it special ordered. I used the first bottle and it was fine. With the second bottle I only noticed the amoeba-like creature after we had already consumed 3/4 of the bottle :hurl: I hate to tell her because she'll probably be upset that she gave us bad oil. I hope she's able to return it otherwise it's a pity to throw it in the garbage.
Are there any other uses for fungus-infested olive oil?
You can get that sediment from olives stored too long before they are pressed for the oil and they develop a bacteria (fungus or yeast) Take it back to where you bought it for a replacement. Buy olive oil in dark green bottles and buy the best first pressed you can afford. :) It has to be stored in a cool dark place. Olive oil starts to age the moment it comes from the olive. Often you see it on sale and the date has passed for it to be fresh..so buyer beware.
How old is the oil? Usually they say that olive oil is only good up to a year. Maybe it's outdated. You should return it to the store where you bought it from.
