Please help me. I would like to make a cover for my sofa. What would be the simplest way to go about it?

Years ago I made covers for 2 love seats. I had no idea where to begin without some kind of pattern. I started with a roll of brown paper and started with the back (length and height) and around the sides sloping to the height of the arms. That was piece 1. Second, I did the same (take off the cushions) for the front and inside arms, giving yourself enough length to be able to tuck down between back and seat. That is piece 2. Now do the same for the seat part, under the cushions to front edge, where you would then measure down to the floor and across to the outside of the arms to form a skirt and decide where you will want to attach ( I used covered buttons) if you want it on the outside or you can attach with wide elastic underneath piece 1. Now you have your basic pattern...mark significant places like arrows for attaching to other pieces.... lay on fabric and pin or trace and cut. Join 1 and 2 which will be the seam along the top of the sofa. This should cover the back and front and arms. Keep the seat and skirt part seperate from the first piece, as they tuck into the same place, down the back. Finish your edges and cover your seat cushions. I made arm covers and throw pillows as well. The hard part is making your pattern, but it is worth the custom look. The whole thing can be sewn in an afternoon. You can add piping and tucks or darts depending on the style of sofa. I hope I have been clear enough with the directions. I am sure there are simpler ways but I was very happy with this. Good Luck with it.
