For a really simple version, all you need is some wood that is as wide as the box depth you want. You can butt joint the corners (no miter required).

Probably some .5" birch would work for you, lets pretend, 4" wide and as long as you need. If you have a router available, you can make a channel on each board about .25" from the edge to slide glass or plexi in. One of the pieces actually gets cut where the channel is to allow you a place to slide the glass in, so it's narrower than the other pieces. Then put the pieces together, add a back of whatever works for you, slide in the glass. You can add a trim piece to the front if you like to give it the style you want and to cover the section where the glass slides in (make sure if it's the bottom you put something there to keep the glass from sliding out).

If you don't have a router, you can still build the box and use plexiglass. It is easy to drill so you can simply screw the plexi to the front of the box once you have filled it as you like. If you use some nice screws it can look pretty contemporary as is or you can make a mock picture frame to attach to the outside to cover the box edge and screws.

You could also get creative and find premade boxes....old shallow drawers that fit the shirts maybe?
