Should new Stairs match Railing or Flooring?

We ripped out the carpet from the family room, and have installed a dark laminate flooring. There are  6 stairs up to the kitchen which we have capped in Maple. We originally intended to stain the stairs to try to match the new  laminate floors, but now the stair caps are in and we are thinking the stairs should match the honey oak railing ?  CathyB

There's nothing wrong with matching the banister railings to the stairs themselves... As long as SOMETHING is coordinating with SOMETHING else, it's not a design faux pas... Or at least not a major one. :)

Personally, I wouldn't mind the stairs matching the floor, and keeping the oak railing. A bit of a contrast.

I think the stairs and bannister should either match the flooring, or be painted out. Senior design editor Cameron MacNeil recommends painting out stairs and railings in this video: http://houseandhome.com/tv/segment/entryway-decorating-tips
