A sign of the times

I think I've mentioned the labour shortage in Calgary (probably the whole province actually), trouble even finding a trades type to work on houses like mine etc.

Well for at least a year the signs outside every restaurant and store have said 'now hiring' or something similar but now it's really hitting. tonight I went to find some drive thru because I was pooped after being outside all day and I can't tell you how many places had the drive thru options blocked off and the two Burger Kings I tried both were closed with signs up saying it was due to staff shortages. I tried 8 places.

This was like 6 PM! HOw do you get something to eat when places are closed around supper time? What are the folks who are driving through town expecting to hit a drive thru doing? I hit a KFC and a staffer who was outside said they were about to close because there was only one person to work. Other places that are usually open late are also closing early. Boy, I have just never seen anything like this (and I used to track things like this for a living). I swear there is no way anyone who wants a job can't have their pick here.

It must drive business owners nuts with all the money in this city and they can't open even for regular hours to sell their stuff.

What is doing my heart some good is knowing all those employers who were total jerks to their staff in years gone by are paying through the wallet now. That'll teach them to treat people badly and about time they learned that too.
