Can anyone tell me if you can 'overcook' in a slow cooker?
I use mine a lot, but this particular recipe for pork tenderloin says cooking time is 4 hours...
usually I leave mine on for 7 or more hours...but haven't cooked pork this way before..........will it just make it better the longer it cooks or can it get tough?
thx

I bake mine at 350* and lay some slices of bacon over the top then apple slices. This keeps the pork moist and delicious. I do not like pork over done so I check it every so often depending on the side of the tenderloin.
Another way I cook it on top of the stove. I slice it not quite 1/2" thick, brown the slices it in a lttle oil. Take the slices out and add some 10% cream mixing in the brown bits from the bottom of the pan to makea nice gravy, then add the prk slices back in and green grapes or diced apple and simmer until done. Yummy.
I'll have to try your recipe (pork tenderloin in the oven)
The one I made the other day was okay.
The pork was certainly tender, but I found the redwine flavor kind of took over.
To me it's kind of a waste to do pork tenderloin in a slow cooker....the BBQ rules by far.
(the maple syrup, grainy mustard is done on the grill)
We have never cooked PT in the oven....will try it.
Thanks, I will give it a try next time.
I guess I am used to throwing in a hunk of beef putting on the lid and cooking it on slow all day. I don't add anything to it so it ends up like a roast except it's sitting in the drippings which I just drain off and make a gravy.
The beef I put in a slow cooker is the lower quality cuts that would have more fat in them than the pork tenderloin though, which is why mine turned out like wood I suppose.
My regular receipe for pork tenderloin is to throw it in the oven, for a bit depending on how big it is, with a some apricot preserves/compote and thyme on top - not too much because then it becomes too sweet and it's the best. I'm thinking of trying it with applesauce sometime too. But I'll try your recipe because during the work week, a slow cooker is the quickest way to have dinner ready.
Is great in the slow cooker.( I put the meat in raw) I make it and let it sit overnight so the flavours are better. I do Chili, stews both beef and chicken, pot roast etc. I also do up the vegs ahead and just toss it all in.
The best thing about a slow cooker is coming to home an already made dinner. The thing about slow cookers is you have to think one day ahead you take out and defrost for tomorrow load the slow cooker in the Am before work and come home to a fully cooked dinner. What I would do is prepare my veggies the night before as I was cleaning up dinner store them in the fridge and in the morning just toss everything inthe slow cooker and we would be off to the Hockey game and drive home in the driving snow storm and walk into the smell of dinner and man is that nice.
It's a very pratcial purchase.
I would go and look at them, different sizes.
Mine is small, but my friend who has a very large one says hers is too big. She said you need to have it at least half full to have it work properly.
There are only 2 of us, so that wouldn't work for me.
Some time ago, someone posted a website...I have made a few of the recipes from it, and was very happy.
and one of the very best thing about slow cooking, are the aromas in your home...for hours on end...mmmmm

Mine holds about 14 cups of liquid do I don't know what size they list that at but it is a good size for a family you can put a roast or a stew in it that will easily feed you. There are tons of recipes on the net for slow cookersand you will find it is the best tool for a working Mom.
I was thinking of buying a slow cooker. What size should I buy ( we are a family of 4) any suggestions? ANd what are your favorite recipes? Thanks
I have used mine lots and I would not be worried about an extra couple of hours as long as it was on low you can easily leave it as they have said as long as there is liquid. My DIL makes a great pork roast with saurkraut that she learned while they were in Germany and she cooks it all day on low.
that's too funny....a disgrace to the pig.
It is still on...there is a lot of liquid.
My partner is an expert griller.....the best melt in your mouth pork tenderloin ever...but there must be a ton of snow on the BBQ, so thought there would be no harm in trying in the slow cooker.
I got the recipe online
easy peasy
INGREDIENTS:
1 (2 pound) pork tenderloin
1 (1 ounce) envelope dry onion soup mix
1 cup water
3/4 cup red wine
3 tablespoons minced garlic
3 tablespoons soy sauce
freshly ground black pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS:
Place pork tenderloin in a slow cooker with the contents of the soup packet. Pour water, wine, and soy sauce over the top, turning the pork to coat. Carefully spread garlic over the pork, leaving as much on top of the roast during cooking as possible. Sprinkle with pepper, cover, and cook on low setting for 4 hours. Serve with cooking liquid on the side as au jus.

I'll let you know how it is
(I used real garlic)
p.s we have many of times marinated pork tenderloin in real maple syrup and grainy mustard.........try it, delicious!
I'm probably too late but I have tried pork tenderloin in my slow cooker and it was awful, I didn't have much liquid in it so maybe that's why. I cooked it all day while I was away at work and it would have been better if I had cooked it in the oven for 30 minutes instead. It was a disgrace to the pig, I felt very guilty.
I'd love to know how yours turned out though as I might consider trying it again with liquid.
I love my slow cooker though, I came home yesterday to slow cooked beef.
ok...i'll be there in a flash...LOL
jenjen,
it does have some water, red wine and soy sauce, so I'm going to give it a go.
At this time of year, we never know when we are going to eat...people dropping in for a cocktail or 10!!
i think as long as it has some sort of liquid water or stock it should be ok...god i leave my stuff in my slow cooker for hours and hours with liquid in it and it's been ok...but you know who might know better is Jeep....i think she uses hers alot too
