That blue delphinium is the first one I ever planted -- I bought it last summer at Home Depot. I didn't do anything special to it over the winter, and it just came back and started growing again this spring. So my guess is that it's pretty hardy in Zone 5 (or am I in Zone 4 -- can't remember!!) I think I gave it a shot of fertilizer after it started growing, and I added some new soil and manure to the garden this year.
I bought two more delphiniums earlier this month -- one was already blooming and has finished, the other currently has buds on it. khyro said that if you cut a delphinium right down after it finishes blooming, you should get a second round of blooms later in the summer. Fingers crossed that it works!!
There are lots of different varieties of delphiniums -- mine are all the shorter, shrub-like variety, as opposed to the typical tall, stalk-like one. I know khyro has some of those tall ones -- maybe she can post some pics and give you some more info.....
