Cathie,
I stained ours in the bedrooms and since they do not get a lot of abuse they have held up nicely. We do have a dog as well so that tells you something. The one thing is that when you talk to your paint/stain supplier be sure to let them know it is a floor and I would also recommend doing several coats if you want an opaque look.

yes, dbd...the floors are fir.
we laid softwood in our last place, and they were gorgeous. i had stained then used a poly urethane over to protect them. it held up nicely, even with the dogs.
so what ever paint i use i'll protect them...thanks for the reminder to do it.

this would be the original fir subfloor? If it is I can tell you one of my neighbours revealed hers (kitchen) and had it stained/sealed and it's gorgeous. Really quite rustic but very nice.

One thing about softwood is they usually aren't kidding when they call it soft so you might want to think about protective coats even over paint. Otherwise I bet a good paint store could recommend a really durable paint or application you could use so it lasts a while.
