Hi,
I am looking to buy bedroom and dining furniture and am having trouble finding a store that sells solid wood furniture and in the style I want.
I am looking for dark, finished wood (like cherry-wood) in a contemporary/classic style for both rooms. I do NOT want traditional but something that is not going to go out of style in the next 5 years. Simple, elegant. Seems like so much furniture is veneer. And, when I ask around for solid wood I'm sent to "cottagy-like" stores with really traditional, frilly pine furniture.
Any good suggestions? I live in Ottawa and while it would be ideal to find a store in town and quite open to stores in either Toronto and/or Montreal.

Michelle,
I don't know of any stores in the Ottawa area but here are some places you might want to check out online and/or request catalogues from in the Toronto area:
www.harvesthouse.ca
www.thomasville.com
www.ennisclareinteriors.com
www.elizabethinteriors.com
I've also been looking for dining room furniture and these places all have some really nice quality stuff in a variety of styles. Elizabeth Interiors in particular has a great web site with lots of pictures, etc.
Good luck!
Last time I was in Ottawa, I walked into Cote Sud near the market. Beautiful store! If you like that kind of furniture, there is a larger Cote Sud store on St. Denis street in Montreal. In fact, there is a fleury of furniture stores along St. Denis and St. Laurent in Montreal like Zone, Cote Sud, Builtmore, Structube...all within a brisk walking distance. Most are modern, eclectic, with a mix of traditional too! Other stores to try not so far away are Stacaro, Maison Corbeil on Cremazie(which carries the Ligne Roset line), Mobilart, or even Roche Bobois on Sherbrooke St. And if you venture north of Montreal into Laval (only 15-20 minutes north) there are a bunch of stores along Boul. le Corbusier. I hope this helps

I'm pretty sure their stuff is solid wood. It's not traditional in the 'frumpy' sense of the word... I think "classic" would be a better adjective. Lots of dark woods with simple lines. A wee bit too masculine for me, but it's very popular with design aficionados. I'm sure they're in Toronto and they do have a website. Good luck.
