Here is the tree in full bloom as of yesterday.
Sort of cheating, this is my brothers house in East Hampton. I wish it were my tree. I feel like it is part mine because he bought a much older home on this spot and planned on doing extensive renovations but when they did inspections he came to the conclusion that the house had to be demolished and a new one built. He knew nothing about gardening but I begged him not to let the bull dozers touch the tree. He did listen to me so he has a new house and a probably 25 year old Rhododendrum.
i'm waiting for janets pics :D
Great flower guys maybe I could post my dandelion later
Same here, no flowers blooming yet! I don't even have a dandelion to post!
here is what I have put in this year and a Rhodo in the front bed we planted last year.
wow I love th midnight feelings.
Great flower guys maybe I could post my dandelion later
where's your pics J? :D ...you didn't think you were gonna get away with not posting any pics did you
guys, beautiful yards and the flower pics are lovely enough to be in a frame :)
smiles
janetc
Phlox are easy to go grow and hardy plants and the "Midnight Feelings" has mahogany black flowers for the gardeners who want a bit of drama.
DBD, put together some container gardens for some instant gardening gratification :) Stick in a bunch of impatiens for bright colour, and some trailing plants and maybe an ornamental grass in the center. It'll be a lot less work than planning and planting a garden, but with the same results -- just on a smaller scale :)
Oh it's so nice to see the gardens taking off. I hope I can get something started here this summer but seeing everything is already growing makes me wonder how much time I will have to get any sort of look this year. I guess I'll just live vicariously through the rest of you for the time being.
that last pic is not very good, I should get a better shot of it during the day and closer.
this pic is of the fence at the back of large garden. that is where the snakeroot and beebalm reside and that whole fence, with a bit of luck will have the nasturtium covering it.
Jenjen, looking at that iris you posted I can't get over how black it is...that has got to be the blackest flower I've ever seen!
Smoodgie, your garden is just bursting with flowers! Nothing but eye candy!
I went to the nursery today and went nutso...I bought a bunch of black stuff and other stuff too. My list goes like this: Gerbera Daisies, flourescent orange ones to add to the herb garden.
Sizzler Salmon Salvia, black pansies and blue Fescue grass for the ornamental garden I'm about to re decorate...lol...it looks awful!
Along the driftwood fence I planted trailing Nasturtium, beautiful leaves and red/orange/yellow flowers that are edible and taste peppery...yumm :p
Heavenly Blue and Pearly Gates Morning Glory along the arbor seperating two beds with a walkway to be through it. Black Bugbane for a tall background clump, Black Hollyhock for somewhere out there...lol, White Snakeroot for a tall background plant, it will have red beebalm on either side of it....and last but not least Ligularia Desdemona up against the house. It has fabulous giant leaves that are purple on one side and green on the other with bright yellow flowers. I also bought Nasturtium seeds to experiment with in different areas and Bells of Ireland a green flower. I planted up until 9:30 pm and still haven't planted them all....Oh and I bought Black Beauty Mulch, I love it, looks like rich soil, very natural and a good background colour to make the plants pop out. I'm soooo happeeeeeeyyyyyy:D:D:D:D:D
here are a few pics...
first the Ligularia..I was in such a hurry to plant before it got dark that I planted it with the leaves facing the wall...duh...oh well, they'll turn around when they realize the sun is on thier backs..lol
Wow, those are REALLY black flowers!! I went home for lunch and took a pic of a black iris that just bloomed. It's really more of a dark purple compared to the flowers in those pics and jenjen's black iris. And I'm with you Indigo, I'm in outdoor mode now!! Not that I've stopped thinking about indoor decorating, but I'll save that for rainy days :)
Here's the black iris, and a few other flowers......
forgot the names:)
the first one is aquilegia viridiflora and the second one is arisaema speciosum
I'm going to the garden centre and scoping out these flowers!! That iris is incredible!! I don't know why they are only now becoming trendy. If planted in the right grouping they look stunning. I can see that bright flowers are easier to work with, they're noticeable no matter what you do with them. But I think that a dark flower is worth putting the effort in to showcase properly. It makes an impact 10x more powerful than any brightly coloured flower! imho:)
Smoodgie, this time of year has me forgetting that I have an interior yet to decorate! Its like I've a one track mind and its all about being out in the yard!
look at these ones that I found on the net...
actually Smoodgie...i ADORE this time of year...t's when i fianally get out of my winter rut and blahs...i'm more cheerful..perkier...less grouchy...well you get the drift...lol
Wow jenjen, that black iris is AWESOME!!!!! I've got a huge batch of black irises about to bloom, but I don't think they're quite that dark.
And your black tulips are lovely, Indigo :) Well, everybody's flowers are lovely :)
Don't you just love this time of year?? :)
it's called Superstition...Loblaws/Superstore carries them...this year i bought a pure white one called Immortality....i'm a total iris and lily girl
Oh i love the black I have never seen them before! :)
i had black tulips...black iris'..black ..hollyhocks...black pansies...the darkest red rose i could find cuz i couldn't get my hands on a black rose bush...darkest clematis i could find...black gladioulas......basically i planted anything and everything i could get my hands on that was dark enough to look black especially cuz they were hard to find...now i've seen things on tv and magazines where they say black flower gardens are a new thing...that they make quite and impact...uhhhh yea...i know...can you believe it we were ahead of our time..LOL...i'm so relieved i'm not the only one that has a fascination with black flowers...everyone thinks i'm a nut...but YAY!!!...you're a nut too...lol
Jenjen, I noticed you mentioned having a black garden at your last place....can you offer some suggestions for flowers that were in there?
I'd like to add a similar garden to my yard. I saw some really black pansies at the garden centre yesterday and had to hold back on buying them because I don't have a place for them yet. But I will soon, dh will be digging out two flower beds for me in the middle of our yard (the sunniest part back there). I want to add black flowers to that area.
a girl after my own heart Indigo...i LOVE black tulips...i gots quite a few meself....by far my favorite...everyones gardens are so beautiful...such pretty flowers and so cheerful looking...
so many beautiful gardens! Where to start, love the lupins, love the tulips, love it all.
I'd have to say my favourite flowers are dark ones, I planted 50 black tulips along my front walk way last fall and only 3 did not make it. I put a fair bit of bone meal or was it blood meal?? I think bone meal...anyhow, they managed to make it through. They were the last to bloom out of all of the tulips and are the only ones left looking nice at this point.
every one of them could be a painting, couldn't it??
Back on my feet -- frickin bees, they stung me and stung me, boy was I sick, little b*st*rds -- see if I ever help them out again -- any way...
Here's a pic of my tree peony, isn't it pretty?
Here's a pic of my youngest picking lupins last year...they grow wild all over Newfoundland..along with Blue Irises. Blocked out her face..cause you never know who/what may be lurking.
itsjustme I love your favourite corner shot! Your hard work has most definitely paid off.
I love hostas and astilbe. I've gone a bit mad with heucheras as well-love the colours they come in. A new astilbe I got last year looks like it's going to flower for me soon, and I am so eager to see if the colour is as hot pink as I espect. I also got a new hosta recently called Whirlwind, I think:
Wow, your gardens are beautiful!! Everything already looks so nice -- just wait till the middle of the summer when the greenery is big and lush and your flowers are blooming..... it's going to look gorgeous!! :)
