are you talking chunks or shredded? Because shredded is better -- the shreds weave together and creat a mass. And you rally ahve to put oin a good thick layer - more than 3 inches. I do that an do not need landscape fabric in addition to it. but that's a lot of mulch if you're covering three acres LOL maybe you had better get that weedeater!
i too prefer sheep manure as opposed to cow....this year i'm trying to keep on top of the weeds....trying to get out there every couple of days and concentrating on just the weeds....the problem is that i can't grow grass here...it's all basically weeds and as long as you keep them cut it looks like grass...lol....weedman would cost a small fortune here with 3 acres...
as my weeds grow like crazy esp when I am up at the cottage :( - I would suggest areas of rock like the other poster - I am not sure about landscape cloth as that is used generally as a barrier for retaining walls etc. In the Shwa we have the weeds as well - One thing to consider is to use sheep manure as it has no weeds compared to the others .
try laying a landscape fabric down first around your plantings then adding your mulch. this should keep the weeds away. i've been into rocks lately. we've finished our gardens with 4" river stones instead of using bark mulch.
