Space around plants

Is there a requirement for space around plants....are you supposed to be able to see the soil or should the plants be touching (not crammed, of course). Does it depend on the plant or is it just a personal preference?

Thanks :)

Help!

I would love to plant a hydrangea....are they fussy? I was thinking in a raised bed that is shady....it gets dappled sunshine in the afternoon. (under tree canopy) I am in zone 5. Should I plant at least 2 or more plants? Any suggestions, comments would be helpful

that when I do the recommended spacings I can see too much dirt b/w plants - it does not have that lush, full look like you see at greenhouses and such - so this year I am planting everything just a little closer together.

just personal preference. DH and I have different views: he prefers to see space/dirt between everything in the garden, but I prefer to have the plants nestled together a bit.

Maintenance is something to consider though, as nestled plants often do outgrow their allotted space and require taming back or division. Also, I usually end up with bare areas when I leave the recommended room aroung perennials and shrubs that will take a few years to reach their full grown size. In that case, annuals are a good way to fill the gaps.
