Staining Hardwood Staircase

I recently purchased a house that has w well worn Oak staircase that is stained a light/natural colour. Would like to refinish it in a darker tone. Does this require a complete strip/restain, or are there products/methods available that could make this job easier?

If you have a Lee Valley Tools near you itmight be worth dropping in and asking them. They have a couple of products for restaining over original stains and would be able to tell you if they are appropriate for your situation.

Hi JohnZee:
There is a no-sand product on the market by Varathane called "Renewal" that allows you to clean up worn wood floors without complete restripping. Haven't used it, and I don't know whether it will darken colour or not. I have seen this product at HD before, and considered buying it, but never have so I can't comment on the effectiveness of it.
Here's a web link:

I know that there are gel stains available that require only a light scuffing of the existing varnish before applying. However, your staircase being well worn may need to be properly sanded on the worst areas so that the stain "takes" evenly.

I've never used the product, but do look for it and inquire if the extra sanding is required. Others on the forum have used it, and if you do a search on gel stains, it should tell you where you can source it.

Good luck, and I hope this helps.
