Hi! I recently purchased some Ikea night tables and dressers in the hopes of being able to stain them the rich dark brown colour that is popular right now.
The problem is that the wood is already stained a light brown shade and has a light clear coat over the stain. I have tried using BM and Minwax Poly stains (polyurethane plus stain in one in the darkest shades available) but have not been able to achieve the dark colour I am looking for even after 3+ coats. I sanded before and applied Minwax pre-stain prior to applying the colour stain and sanded with a fine steel wool in between coats with no luck.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to another product/type of stain I could try? Should I just give up and paint? Minxwax does make some very dark shades of regular stain but they do not seem to be available in any of the stores in my area (Durham Region).
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

but, they have a lot of solid pieces as well. Unfortunately most of it is clear coated, you have to strip it down first unfortunately.
their furniture is mainly veneered so you may not have success staining it. if it is real wood, that's another story. you may be better off just painting it....
I bought an wooden table from loblaws, I stripped it, sanded it down to bare wood. THen I used a dye from lee valley in a dark walnut and it stained the table very dark. I applied a clear coat and voila! It was a huge amount of work mind you, but in the end worth it.
