you'll love this one...i tell ya there is never a dull moment in my house!

saturday ds#2 wasn't feeling well..his asthma flared up again...bit of a fever...puking at the hockey arena...so ok here were go...puffers...childrens advil...chicken soup..and rest...of course i'm a lil worried cuz there is menegitis at the kids school recently..but the symptoms of ds were the usual not feeling flu..usually gone in a couple of days...so sunday comes around and well ds isn't getting any better...actually worse...fever got worse...and he slept all sunday morning...ds #1 had a hockey game sunday afternoon an hour from home so he went to his game and i was going to take ds to a walk in clinic...well up here in smallville either we have no clinic or it's closed...so i figured ok well i know i'm probably gonna get in crap but i'll take him to emerg...but his fever was gettin' pretty high...so off we go to emerg...wonderful hospital lemme tell ya...the doctor comes in checks him out...and says yea i can hear him wheezing...but i'm gonna send him for a chest xray just to make sure he doesn't have pnemonia...ok no problem...he's had pnemonia before so this is good..i like this doctor...we go get our chest xray...and then the tech comes out and says i just wanna make sure he doesn't have anything in his shirt...she feels around his shirt and says ok thanks and leaves...so we head back to the room...the doctors comes in and asks my son if he's swallowed anything...and my son says no...well he calls me to go look at the xray and low and be hold my son has a SCREW IN HIS RIGHT LUNG!...yea that's right a screw..and it's creating an infection in his lung..so the doc calls Sick Kids hopsital in Toronto and they're waiting for us...skip all the bs that comes with going to hospitals..they take him from registration to and exam room and prep him for surgery...they're going to remove it with a scope...they had a volunteer come in and show ds what an IV is and what it does...showed him pictures of the OR...completely calmed him down...he told me he wasn't scared anymore...they take him into the OR at 9:50 pm...10:30 the surgeon comes out and tells us ...we didn't get it...HUH!!!!!!!!!!..what do you mean you didn't get it...well apparently it's further down then they thought and been there longer than they thought...the soft tissue from the lung has grown around it...so they called a special radiologist team to come in and bring special equipment so that they can look at where it is aswell as see where they are going to get it...but that's not happening til wednesday...so we stayed the nite at Sick Kids and just got home yesterday at 5pm...apparently it's not a big screw but it's there..how it got there no clue...if he had swallowed it he would have passed it ...but somehow he inhaled it....so that was my weekend....how was yours...lol...i'm laughing now but i have never been so scared in my life...the funny thing is that they say this may be the reason for his asthma...since being diagnosed with asthma no one has taken a chest xray of him...they even diagnosed him with asthma without a chest xray....so wednesday we go back to sick kids hospital and they're hoping to do it as a day surgery but depending on how he is when he wakes up determines if we stay overnite again....i just thought i would share this with everyone......

hey Cat...i bet i got you beat now don't i?...lol

jenjen

well that's just it..any time he hasn't been feeling well and i've taken him to a clinic or doctor...no one has done chest xrays on him...just antibiotics and go home and rest

Wow so it hasn't just happened it could have been a while. Amazing that he has just now got a fever. Great to have a DR that looked into it and not just send him home with some pills.

jenjen's picture
jenjen

they have no idea...long enough for the soft tissue in the lung to grow completely around it

Jeep's picture
Jeep

Do they have any idea as to how long the screw has been in there.

jenjen's picture
jenjen

hey tryn'...i did they said it's the infection in his lung that's causing the fever...just to monitor him....give him advil...if he gets really bad to take him back in

You're in the best of hands jenjen. Growing up I've had surgery at sick kids in T.O. they're the best. They really make the kids comfortable...and apparently (according to my mom) they're really great with the parents. Your son and your family will be in our prayers. Keep everyone posted....2blues

Boy this is a flukey thing and even though it's something to go through, I'm glad they found it and are taking care of it. it would be so nice if this is the cause of the asthma and that were gone too.

I guess some spoiling will be due one little guy for a bit eh?

PS. You have to keep that screw for show and tell!!! mmm, can you post the x-ray on here, lol

Note to self: Tell my boys to NOT snort screws. :D

Funny, one day we're joking about a feather duster in ER, and the next it is all too real and very serious.

thank you everyone...they did tell me that it can't be too big otherwise we woulda noticed a problem earlier as it would have blocked his airways and his breathing would have been worse...

Wow Jen that is scary it is amazing nice to finally have a Dr. that took the time to see why he was sick. Do they think this was the cause of his fever. As far as looking any good the screw will probably br rusted right out if it anything like the pin my son swallowed. This will be great if it the cause of his asthma and it is cured. Hugs to you and DS.

Wow, that's quite the story! I can only imagine how scared you must be for him. I hope all goes well on Wednesday and he has a speedy recovery. Definitely ask for the screw ...he can bring it to school for show and tell!
